"Speed of Purple at the Troubadour"

Next up were my favourites, Speed of Purple, created by Sallie Campbell and including a variable line up of other brilliant goddesses. Tonight it was Sallie on keyboards, violin and vocals with Velvet on the drum and Danielle on Cello. Once these three began to play, a hush fell over the audience. To watch these three women as they play is like watching a fine ballet or some kind of ancient sacred ritual. The precision and delicacy as they create these ethereal sounds is like watching magic happen. Sallie is the brilliance behind the exquisite musical arrangements of Speed of Purple; incorporating layers of delicate strings and gorgeous piano melodies and catchy rythms that would leave Mozart blushing. - Faster Louder

Bio

Speed of Purple is the newest musical project for ex-Tulipan member Sallie Campbell, showcasing her original compositions: both songs and instrumentals.
Sallie studied at the Conservatorium (Piano and Violin) and was a core member of Tulipan whose achievements include an Aria nomination for their debut album, two European tours and winning Triple J’s unearthing the world. Sallie has also written soundtracks for QTC, La Boite, ABC TV, QPAC, and various short films and has performed and written string arrangements with Grant McLennan, Kate Miller Heidke, Women in Voice, Christine Johnston, Tylea, Annie Lee, Chris Pickering and Emma Dean. Sallie was violinist and backing vocalist with Kate Miller Heidke, which saw Speed of Purple gather a national audience. She is currently a member of innovative string orchestra "Deep Blue"
While the instrumentals in Speed of Purple's repertoire have the pulsing rhythms and intense musiciality familiar from her work with Tulipan, it is the songs which foreground Campbell’s continuing development as a writer. In them relationships, love and friendship bathe in a musical fusion of folk and pop styles, featuring intricate piano textures and string melodies. The music of Speed of Purple is driven by piano and violin, accompanied by percussion and vocals from Velvet Pesu and Cello from Kathryn McKee.
Speed of Purple performances to date include Woodford Folk Festival, The Zoo, Ric’s, The Troubadour, Chill on Queen, Valley Markets and the Medieval Fayre, Riverside Markets, Judith Wright Centre, Sydney's Vanguard and Valley Fiesta. Most recently Speed of Purple has been supporting Kate Miller Heidke nation wide.
Speed of Purple’s debut album was released in July 2008.
