Bio

SpeL was born to parents of Puerto Rican decent in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They lived in the mostly Latino neighborhood where gangs like” The Phantoms” and “The Justice of Brooklyn” ruled the streets. Heroin was on the rise and the “coca” was the brain numbing of choice. Looking for a better life, when SpeL was six years old his parents decided to move from Williamsburg, Brooklyn to Hollis Queens where he would later find Rap in the form of Run D.M.C., LL Cool J, A Tribe Called Quest.

As a kid he could remember writing poems and jingles for any and every girl that he liked. It came so naturally to him that his friends began to ask him to write letters for the girls that they were interested in. All they had to do was sign the bottom of the note, card, or letter and wait for the results. That was where it all began for him. But still he failed to recognize his potential as a lyricist.

Kicked out of high school he ended up in a last chance program for kids over 17 years of age. Although he was only 16 his parents managed to get him in some how. Apparently the hustle was strong with them too. This outreach program in Flushing is where he met his partner in rhyme Clever and they would form the group called C.L.S. Shortly after Mr. Look away would join them and complete this trio of tumultuousness. They worked with a variety of producers like the Phat Heads from South Jamaica, J.S. from Corona, to finally making up the dream team with 100 Proof products (Joey Keyz) at Power Play Studios. Collaborating Lyrical Skills they rocked shows in places like the Remote Lounge and Baby Phat Bar in N.Y.C.

Now you’ll find SpeL on his new solo venture in Central Florida. Still banging out tracks and looking to find an inlet that will expose his thought provoking, barrel smoking, and head nodding Hip Hop to the South then the world. Versatile enough to bring that East coast rapid fire flavor influenced by the one and only Big Pun (R.I.P.), to killing an 808 laced track with a killer snare. He finds he can not escape the call of the culture. Currently working with Butcherz Blok and Folk Lore Productions from Brooklyn, it seems that his past and his present are now intertwined. It’s a new era like Clev said “poppin locks like break dancers” and this time for SpeL it is all or nothing. Check him out on the web www.myspace.com/spel1 and enjoy the ride!
