All my favorite music, mine and otherwise, played with zeal and enthusiasm. I love music, and love to perform it, and I'm good. Really good.

In college, while sitting in music class, I always got the same rhetoric. "That kid is going to actually DO something with his music." And I have. I perform weekly at a church, and often I'm asked to write a song for a special occasion. I hit up the open mic night scene sometimes, but really enjoy getting together with the other talents of Columbus, OH and PLAY. I'll write out charts of my tunes, and we'll all find something new to bring to them. Music is, above all else, fun. It's an expression of the human condition, a litmus of good and bad, rich and poor, troubled-not and dying. But in the face of ALL negativity, music is fun.

I simply try to capture and share, with whoever wants to listen, a piece of that condition, and let people have some fun.

Also, I do instrumental gigs often enough to keep up a repertoire of tunes, and can sight read chords and melodies (together) well. If needed, I can fill a cabaret/house party/wedding instrumental spot, and I have heard many good responses.

SONG WRITING: I have been writing for over 10 years with good results. I constantly experiment with song form and structure, plays on words, hooks in lyric and phrase. I love a tight, concise form, no wasted space or words.

I write about love (duh), God (His place in my life, sometimes wondering what that is...), and STORIES. I love a good story. Once I find a story to tell, I obsess over how to tell it best, with little twists and turns necessary to any novel (so why not a song?), and a melody that keeps you listening, maybe singing along, tapping your toe. I love performing, but I love being handed ideas to put to music as much or more.

So I perform and I write. I love music. Anything else you want to hear about? Hire me and I'll tell you everything I know! The word "email" is included in my email address.

Cheers,
Spencer Elliott

It Was You

Written By: Spencer Elliott

It was You who gave me reason
It was You who let me stray
When I reached out for the light I saw
It was You, Lord, all along

It was You who brought the darkness
Just so I could see the light
It was You I witnessed in the new dawn
It was You, Lord, all along

It was You soothed my fear
Even as You sent the storm
I saw Heaven, felt Hope, as the sky turned blue
It was beautiful. It was You

It was You in the rolling thunder
And in the hush of awe that reigned
In the endless silence I could hear Your song
It was You, Lord, all along

You Got Me Down

Written By: Spencer Elliott

It was the end of a night of drinking alone at the bar
I had the only stool not up on a table
And I was in the middle of drowning my sorrows
You were my server, my angel with a bottomless beer
You got the jukebox goin' with David Allen Coe and said,
"We're closed. Get out or get over here!"

refrain:
You came around flirtin' and hurtin' my heart with a look
I'm certain that I fell apart when you took my hand and asked me to dance
Honey, don't you know I'm no good at romance
I fell in love, fell flat. I'm that kind of man,
But you were looking for a one-night stand
You got me down, when you got up and got out of my life

I'm guessin', my lesson couldn't be drilled into my head
She said, "How 'bout a fling?" I said, "How 'bout a ring?"
Honey, can't you understand I was a little misled?

You came around.... (refrain)

I fell in love and you know, sure enough I said so
And I saw a new look in her eyes
She flew out the door and I knew that no more
Would she be coming back to me, and I'm not surprised
She left me breathless
I didn't even put up a fight
I just got to my car and got out to the bar
and bought the only cure I could afford tonight

She got me down, drinkin' and thinkin' 'bout makin' a rule:
There's a link between lovers and fools,
So I'll try to ignore the new girl at the door,
But I did it again, just like I done it before

You came around.....(refrain)

Can't Remember Everything

Written By: Spencer Elliott

copyright 2008

refrain:
I'll remember your face, your eyes
and your kisses goodbye
and the way you'd make me smile when you'd sing
I'll remember your way and your why till the day that I die
But girl I can't remember everything

And she said, "Honey, won't you put down that guitar.
If you don't clean the kitchen, you can't be no country star."
And I swore that I'd get it, but the kitchen's still a wreck.
She woke me up the next morning,
saying, "How could you forget?"

Well, honey....
I'll remember your face....(refrain)

And she said, "Honey, when you comin' home tonight?
I got dinner on the table and it's such a lonely sight.
When you gonna come on home and celebrate with me?
And don't you tell me you forgot our anniversary!"

Well, honey....
I'll remember your face (refrain)

And she said, "Honey, don't forget the grocery store.
It's mama's birthday cake you're shoppin' for.
I tied a string around your finger, wrote it in your phone.
If you don't bring that birthday cake, you better not come home!"

I still ain't gone home yet!

Well, then one night, I learned my lesson good.
We were making love, as lovers should.
And sometimes my mind slips into an old, old memory.
Then she said, "WHO'S VICTORIA?!"
and started glaring down at me

Well.....honey.....
I'll remember your face...(refrain)

Road to Paradise

Written By: Spencer Elliott

It ain't easy, the road to paradise
It's a well worn road, but I guess I lost my stride

So I sit down, weary from heaven's trail
Singin' to the highway things I failed to do.

And I think of heaven as a bit like comin' home.
But I lost the front door key, and I can't reach the window

And step for step, day by day,
I've forgotten everything but one basic truth:

That never does God give clear directions home
Lord knows I've lost my way before
And I may search the world, I may search it twice
But no stone goes unturned
On the road to paradise

I'm going to die someday in God's arms
Let my worn-out body lie
Let my free soul journey on
But when I thought I had plenty of time,
Fate swept in and stole my life

See, just when you've got your future sound,
You land flat on your back as the world turns around on you

Never does God give clear directions home
I stood out of the way, before
Grieving only for myself, and though I wasn't at the heist,
When I came back there was nothing....
Where's the road to paradise?

It's been several weeks, and I can't find one kind ear
So my song grows week, with darkness creeping near

And didn't you ever wonder why
God shines his love like a beacon light in you?
Your way is marked, your key in hand
Could you lead me back to the promised land I knew?

Never does God give clear directions home
Lord knows I've been this way before
I've given everything; I've paid my price
Now I must on my way, I must be on my way
But never does God give clear directions home
Lord knows I've lost my way before
I've felt hell's fire burning me, I've felt cold as ice:
It's part and parcel of the pilgrimage,
Down the road to paradise

Hey, Alright

Written By: Spencer Elliott

I've got heaven singing in my head
My feet are moving me to the promised land
And I'm following Jesus, his guiding light
He's gonna take me there, hey, alright

Do you want to join me?
Listen to what I say
Let your love for the Lord show you your way
And share it with the people
It's a way of life
It's a good, good thing, hey, alright

You've got love in your eyes, let it shine!

So now I'm takin' my soul to heaven....

I'm takin' my soul to heaven's door
I'll offer it with joy to my sweet Lord
'Cause I got his love shining in my eyes
It's a good, good thing, hey, alright

You've got love in your eyes, let it...

Shine for the ones making their way
Shine for those who'll see it
Shine for the ones who look away
Shine for those who need it to let their own love shine on their way through life
Hey, alright

So now I'm takin' my soul to heaven....

You've got love in your eyes, let it shine!

Fly Away Sorrow

Written By: Spencer Elliott

copyright 2005

Sippin' my bourbon,
Wonderin' what day it is
Dreamin' 'bout tomorrow
and it seems the dream is the place to be

When I finish mine, and when you finish yours
Fly away sorrow,
We'll sing and play, take our blues away

And laugh as well as we can
It won't take too long
To feel so good
So by the end of the song
We'll get up and reach for the sky
And start to feel better
'Cause there's no need to stay
In some dream far away
Life surrounds us

Well, since we're all here
And there's no place better nearby,
Fly away sorrow,
'Cause it seems to me, this is the place to be

So laugh as well as you can
It won't take too long
To feel so good
So by the end of the song
You can get up and reach for the sky
And start to feel better
'Cause there's no need to stay
In some dream far away
Life surrounds us

Ode to Miss America

refrain:
Pack up the railcar, meet me at the station
We got a long way to go
I'm in love with the entire nation
There ain't a girl that I wouldn't like to know

I sent my love to Virginia
To the girl with the pretty red hair
I sent my love to Virginia, Lord
But the girl I love wasn't there

So I sent my love to Georgia
They say my love waits for me
I sent my love to Georgia, Lord
But Georgia met Virginia in Tennessee

So pack up the railcar....(refrain)

Carolina had a pretty mouth for kissin'
But she went up the Appalachian Way
She went north, but it's the south I'm missin', Lord
Myrtle's at the beach and it's a beautiful day

So pack up the railcar....(refrain)

Now, I went up to see Marilynn
Now, Assawoman, Sound and true
But I rode off the next morning, Lord
'Cause I kNew Jersey would have something fun to do!

So pack up the railcar...(refrain)

Now I been deep in Dakota
And I'd MountAnna anytime
But I snuck out while Minn-gotta-Soda
Call-ing-for-Nia to be mine!

So pack up the railcar...(refrain)

I Won't Treat You Mean

Written By: Spencer Elliott

One more time I'm gonna give you all my dignity
Beg you for a chance of love down on bended knee
See what I'm saying? I'm weighing in my case
I got evidence aplenty, the proof is commonplace
That I won't treat you mean
No, I won't treat you mean

One more time ain't gonna kill you, honey, hear me out
I ain't like those other guys, I know what love's about
See what I'm saying? I'm saying it so plain
I got evidence aplenty, proof to back my claim
That I won't treat you mean
No, I won't treat you mean

You'll find out I wasn't lying if you leave me hear like this
All my tenderness you take for granted--
Don't take for granted what you'll miss
See, all my tenderness you take for granted
Never granted me one kiss

So one more time and then I'll stop saying what you know
Men ain't worth the trouble but we're sure to steal the show
See what I'm saying? There's no delaying love
I got evidence aplenty, the proof is sure enough
And I won't treat you mean
No, I won't treat you mean

I'll Follow

Written By: Spencer Elliott

copyright 2009

I'll Follow

I believe still you and me will make it anywhere
Through hard rains and hard terrains we'll go without a care

Someday, there may be a fork in the road
Who can say for sure which way we'll go?
So many miles often make a heavy load for one to bear
But if I know the way, I'll be there

You've got dreams you never seem to put away for good
I've got dreams, too, but they're means to another day with you

Someday, there may be a choice we'll make
I'll put away my hell for your heaven's sake
So often lovers have to give more than they take to be fair
But if there's room in your heart, I'll be there

I've often gone without you,
but I've never gotten far
You've got some way about you
That keeps me wanting more
There was never any doubt
You've got to go for what you're searching for
But wherever you go I'll follow

Someday, there may be a choice we'll make
Who can say for sure which road we'll take?
We've got entire lives ahead of us to break and repair
But where your heart takes you, I'll be there

I've often gone without you,
but I've never gotten far
You've got some way about you
That keeps me wanting more
There was never any doubt
You've got to go for what you're searching for
But wherever you go I'll follow

I believe still you and me will make it anywhere
