Bio

Having gained an interest in music at an early age, Spencer Inch has met with continued success as a well-rounded drum set player, percussionist, and educator. Born and raised in Wilton, Connecticut, he began taking lessons at the age of six with jazz drum set player John Cutrone and continued his study of jazz and classical music through the graduate school level. Immersion in highly diversified performing and educational experiences has led Spencer to be comfortable in many genres of music across many percussion instruments. “Spencer possesses technical proficiency at the instrument without sacrificing his musical priorities and his talent for making a band sound great,” says Dan C. Armstrong, professor of percussion at Penn State University.

While at Penn State, Spencer received an honorable mention in the Yamaha Young Performing Artist Competition, the Steve Ettleson PASIC 2010 Scholarship from the Percussive Arts Society, an Outstanding Soloist Award from the 2008 Notre Dame Jazz Festival, and Penn State School of Music’s prestigious Creative Achievement Award. During his graduate jazz studies at the University of Miami, Spencer had the privilege to perform with three 2012 Down Beat Student Music Award winning jazz vocal ensembles, as a member of the rhythm section. However, his greatest passion lies in theatre drumming, as is evident in his extensive experience playing in pit orchestras of Penn State University, University of Miami, and New World School of the Arts musical productions, as well as having played Off-Broadway in a production of The Sphinx Winx and in other local professional theatre company productions.

Spencer possesses a Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance from Penn State University and a Master of Music degree in Jazz Instrumental Performance from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. He currently resides in the greater Miami area, where he performs regularly with small jazz ensembles, club bands, and theatre pit orchestras.
