"SPIDER NICK & THE MADDOGS"

After a two –year hiatus, Spider Nick and The Maddogs are back and “very much alive”.
Their new work “Bone Dog” reveals what is best described as a ska/punk band of many shades and colors. “I Don’t Want To” opens the disc with a kick-down-the-door Iggy Pop drive. “Life Is Good” follows with something more on the side of ’80 new-wavers Madness. Later the band put on their blues shades of the Motown scented “Slowly Going Insane”. Nick croons about losing sanity and “loving every minute of it” while the sweet sound of brass provides some finger-snapping hooks.
The band is nothing if not seasoned and tight. The current lineup features Nick Martielli doing vocals and blowing tenor sax. Chuck Thurau plays bass and sings, while Sean Block plays drums. Matt O’Neil and Jay Hackett play guitars and provide backing voices. Completing the unit is James Fulfaro on alto and baritone sax, and on trombone is Chris Malone.
“Chinatown” is a hat-tip to the sound that made Van Morrison a favorite of those with a jones for white soul. This is perhaps the best crafted and most radio-friendly song in the bunch, and it is moments like these that prove that this record is not a reunion as much as it is a rebirth.
If there was any doubt that this band has soul, it is laid to rest in track ten when the guys spin their web around Sam Cooke’s classic “Change Is Gonna Come”. And though the arrangement is reworked, the feeling in the original is not lost in the translation.

"Bone Dog Review"

Spider Nick and The Mad Dogs is a veteran Long Island-based ska punk act whose unique blend of ska, punk, r&b, and rock will leave you dancing in the aisles clamoring for more. Having been around for a long time now, the band's vast musical experience is well documented on Bone Dog. There's a little bit of something for everyone in this collection, from the smoky roadhouse blues of "Slowly Going Insane" to the upbeat ska of "Celebrate". Showcasing the band's versatility, this septet, which boasts three horns, two guitars, and a sturdy rhythm section, really clicks in together no matter which style the band decides to play in and wails with the kind of abandon you used to find in a rock band before the days of digital studios and Pro-tools touchups. The troupe also delve into some interesting covers, from a punk medley that echoes Sex Pistols, to a Sam Cooke tune, all the way to the Spiderman theme song done ska style, further exhibiting the band's love for music and interpretative skills. Bone Dog is a virtual 10-track party from start to finish, and if you dig bands like Devo, The Cars, Less Than Jake, George Thorogood, or any type of rock that makes you shake your ass, allow Spider Nick and The Mad Dogs the opportunity to whisk you away for a hearty shot of good time rock.

Spider Nick & The Maddogs
Bone Dog

This Long Island based septet sprang from the Third Wave Ska scene in 1996,
and while they still show their roots (their ska adaptation of the Spiderman
theme, included here, has the earmarks of a genre classic), they've pushed
well beyond those borders, incorporating rock, surf, shag and soul styles
into a sound that has made them one of the premier dance and party bands of
their home region.

Bone Dog is their third full length release, and shows off a band at the
peak of the kind of power and cohesion that comes from playing an average of
100 shows a year since their inception. With all seven pieces going full
bore at an often furious pace, their experience as road warriors is put to
the test, and they never fail. All three saxophones, two guitars, drums and
bass hang together with impressive discipline, but a discipline that never
restrains the spirit of the music or the joy of the listener.

After running through the seven original tracks that open the album
(standouts include the topical opener, "I Don't Want To," and the mid-tempo
pop-rocker "Slowly Going Insane"), they turn in three covers that are as
impressive for the creativity of their choices as for the outstanding
quality of the performances. In addition to the already mentioned
"Spiderman," there's a punk medley built around Plastic Bertrand's 1977 hit,
"Ca Plane Pour Moi," and a soulful, if somewhat skankified, turn with Sam
Cooke's "Change Is Gonna Come."

Altogther, it's the kind of album that will turn a quiet night at home into a
party, and a party into a blast. Don't miss it.
