Make no mistake about it, SPIES is a band. Formed in St. Paul in 2008, the group has already recorded a six-song EP titled Hello, Halo. Theyve also played numerous shows in and out of the Twin Cities, including the Booker-Mini Cancer benefit in Rochester, MN in front of over a thousand people. Led by co-lead singers Luke Slisz and Paul Winkels, the band also features Devin Farlow on the drums, Ben Pelowski on guitar, and Nick Pelowski on bass.

SPIES finds its influences and inspiration in classic bands as opposed to more recent groups. The group combines the sunny harmonies of the Beach Boys, mechanical synth sounds of New Wave groups such as the Cars and Squeeze, and the cold, spacey guitar sounds of the Pixies to create a sound best described as frozen surf-rock. Lukes lyrics speak universal truths while avoiding clichs, a difficult task made significantly easier due to Devins intense drumming and the groups ethereal harmonies, which seem to give the words a meaning beyond their definition.

SPIES continues to gain popularity going into 2009. They hope to release an albums worth of songs early in the year, and according to their horoscope, should get their big break in mid to late May after a chance encounter with a friend of a close associate. Even if its wrong, 2009 will still be a big year for SPIES, because they have said it will be so.
