Born and raised in Southern Virginia, the house where Sean Patrick Mulroy grew up was built in 1801 and was commandeered by the union army during the civil war to serve as a makeshift hospital. As a boy, Sean loved to peel back the carpets to show where the blood from hasty surgeries on wounded soldiers had stained the wooden floorboards. Now he writes poems.
Sean was the unfortunate victim of gay bashing in New York City last year. His story is one of HUNDREDS around the country as hate crimes have spiked. An understanding and a strategy to fight this wave of hate is the basis of Sean's program.
Sean is the author of The Pornography Diaries, a poetic study of love and sex as seen through the lens of media study and film analysis. Sean has performed his poetry in art galleries, literary festivals, concert venues, and universities in 10 countries and on 3 continents. He has participated in 13 national poetry competitions, written and recorded 4 albums of music, and sold over a thousand books of his poetry. His work has been published or is forthcoming in The Bakery, Assaracus, Rua de Baixo, Network Awesome, Moonshot, Side B, Union Station, Tandem, Frigg, Neon, Best Indie Literature of New England, Flicker and Spark: A Contemporary Queer Anthology of Spoken Word and Poetry, and Ganymede.
Sean currently resides in Western Massachusetts while working on multiple projects in music, literature and television media. His work most often brings him to New York City and Boston.
