"Southern Rapper sees longevity in hip hop"

When it comes to bringing the heat,
Hughes Springs, Texas rapper S. Poe
(real name Kanin K. Lee) paves the way for
longevity in Hip Hop. S. Poe believes that
past experiences he has traveled through
is keeping the industry alive and the new
artist will make sure it stays a lifetime. Intelligent
in his own right S. Poe explains why
Hip Hop is very much alive.
EXPLAIN WHO You Are....:
I was a Concert Promoter and Vice President of
Fab Fam Entertainment, who as an artist learned
the business from both perspectives. I’ve been
on stage with some of the hottest rappers that
came through or reside in the South. Now I
spend 13 hrs a day in home offi ce writing music,
networking online and in the studio. Cutting
men’s hair is my hustle. My profession is distribution
of my music by any means necessary.

Birthday:
June 29th, 1978 -- disco baby
HOW ARE YOU DOING THINGS.....: Trying to play
as my own agent, and sell myself, not selling out,
and trying to get my hands on every piece of
the pie that I can get. Comparing me to other
rappers can’t be done because I’m not just an
artist. I engineer in the studio, know the business
of the C.E.O. position, and I think P. Diddy said it
best. “Know your craft” and everything about it.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
I enjoy being on stage saying something I wrote
whether the crowd singing it with me or not. The
“STAGE” is my life in music not the fame or the
money. The stage has no dress code, no age
limit and is what I make it. Plus everything you do
can end up a fad, history, or a lesson learned for
someone else.
HOW WERE YOU FIRST INSPIRED TO PURSUE THIS CAREER? My dad use to work at a radio station in the
70’s and he had every song you could name on record. As a child I grew up knowing about instruments
and live bands. The fi rst time I ever stood in front of a crowd and said the line “THAT MAKE EM PUT
THEY HANDS IN THEY FACE LIKE THEY BLOWING ON SOME DICE” I knew I was nice and fell in love with the
feeling. You can say I been chasing the feeling every since!
WHO ARE/WERE MAJOR INFLUENCES FOR YOU? MUSICALLY? Or course Tupac, Dre and the Deathrow
camp, U.G.K., Too Short, & Biggie. Personally, I would say my whole family is a major infl uence because
everybody either sings, writes, plays an instrument, or either work in the industry already.
DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR? DESCRIBE YOUR RELATION: My mentors are Paul Mooney and Dave Chappelle.
I look up to those that keep it real about our race and embracing it instead of sugar coating it.
Just like Tupac. I don’t know these guys but they taught me a life time worth of lessons with their own
experiences and the way they handled them.
WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW? I got a lot of music I just fi nished. I’m really just adding
new songs to more songs and trying to see which ones will make my freshman album. I was in the studio
for the whole month of June fi nishing projects with T.N.N. out of the Crooked I. on their freshman project
and I got six songs for the Ex-O project, where I appear as dude, Extra Ordinary, featuring Big Rich and
coming 2007.
WHAT PROJECT WAS THE MOST EXCITING FOR YOU AND WHY? Working
with T.N.N. on their album was very exciting. We did a lot of shows together.
So doing the album was something we all waited and wanted to
do, and the fan base supports the show majorly. I got a few of the tracks
we did together on my album. So expect to hear from them boys real
soon.
WHAT PROJECTS OR OPPORTUNITIES ARE YOU SEEKING IN THE NEAR
FUTURE? Working with every major artist that wants to help me get this
money and further my career with longevity.
IN YOUR OWN WORDS, DESCRIBE THE STATE OF HIP HOP AND THE
ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY (OR YOUR PARTICULAR INDUSTRY). HOW
ARE YOU CHANGING THINGS? Hip Hop always gets sugar coated ever
so many years with a fad or what’s new but those that rap on the reality
side know about what’s going on. Hip Hop and Rap will always be labeled in the great and respected
perspective. How can they not relate to something that they are going through? I plan to uphold that
image of realness. So the younger generation keeps Hip Hop real and not Hollywood.
TELL ME TWO INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT YOU, WHICH ARE NOT WELL KNOWN? I’m very much a family
man. They are all I think about and I’m very much into God.
(FOR ENTERTAINER) What image are you trying to communicate to the public? That I’m a black and
proud hood cat with skills. I done been around every type of bad person you can think of. My experiences
and music are classic hits and lessons.
(YOUR COMMERCIAL) WHAT OTHER INFORMATION DO YOU WANT TO COME OUT AS A RESULT OF THIS INTERVIEW?
I want to let those that wonder am I good enough to get this interview that I’m consistent with
hit songs, and I got more to come. Plus I’m real and not Hollywood.
HOW CAN FANS CONTACT YOU? Leaving a myspace message at www.myspace.com/therealspoe or
www.s-poe.com (email fabfam2000@yahoo.com)
IS THERE ANYONE YOU WISH TO RECOGNIZE? God for the lessons and blessings, U & U magazine cause
they believe me and my music, Fab Fam Entertainment because that’s how I got in the game and last

Bio

S. Poe Bio
The competitive nature, the ability to convert past failure into something positive, the constant drive to perfect the rap talent, the non-stop working and grinding and not to mention various fans and thousands of copies of the music circulating the metroplex as a result. Los Angeles native S. Poe demonstrates through his hard work, lyricism, and attitude what many artists lack--- a vision of providing a positive voice to fans as well as accepting challenges in the music industry and applying them into his emerging career.
S. Poe was born in LA but moved to Texas at the age of 14. He began his quest to rap success as a concert promoter for the next few years. In April 2004, he received his opportunity when he networked with various connections at the annual Kappa Beach Party. S. Poe began to open up for many artists through his connections after deciding to take a different avenue besides concert promoting. His first major event as an artist was in May 2004 when he performed at a pool party with late Houston rapper Big Moe in Dallas. S. Poe’s performance gained much notoriety that the main artist performed an encore.
An emerging career also brings temporary downfalls. S. Poe applied a majority of his time into recording an album in his studio. However, a lack of knowledge about the business aspect of the industry led to a minor decline after about one and a half years.
By the end of 2006, things were starting to look back up for S. Poe. For the next
two years, S. Poe and his team began to manually manufacture CDs, he worked with local artists, and he assisted with local television shows including Slab Lab TV and Mike City TV. In addition, he threw about six concerts and opened up for artists.
In April 2007, the climax of S. Poe’s career took place when he received the
chance of a lifetime. He opened up for various artists such as Lil’ Wayne, Jim Jones, and
Young Jeezy for the Street Dream Tour in front of thousands of fans.
For the rap industry and the countless Dallas music fanatics, there is much more in store. S. Poe has successfully handed 8,000 copies of his music to music fanatics city-wide. In addition, his knowledge of artist development, management, and photography continues to increase. Last month, he also released his album “Will Rap for Millions.”
S. Poe is definitely not the average artist. His businessman mentality along with his refusal to fail foreshadows the start of a lasting music career. For this local artist, quitting is definitely not a part of his vocabulary. Currently living in a city consisting of a cutthroat yet unpredictable music industry ultimately stimulates S. Poe to utilize the competition and ultimately reach his goal as a highly successful artist.
