"The Spoils Return to Saskatoon"

The Spoils, an indie rock duo from Regina, will be making their return to Saskatoon tonight, Aug 2, at Vangelis.

Other performers include Saskatonians Shockflesh and Winnipeg’s Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers.

The Spoils’ most recent foray into Saskatoon included a stint opening for the recently reunited Despistado. Live, bassist and front woman Riva Farrell-Racette immediately commands attention with her punctuated growl, while drummer Dustin Gamracy holds it all down with effortless-yet-complex backbone drumming.

Amidst the low end thuggish noises of a bass amp speaker being repeatedly hit, The Spoils deliver glorious fuzzed-out anthems for those who like their rock loud like the business end of a Boeing 747.

Ominocity recently caught up with Riva for a chat on upcoming Spoils records, loop pedals and the Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards Festival in Winnipeg.

"Introducing the Spoils"

Some band’s first shows can be a little rough. That said, I’m thinking the Spoils will go over really well. Tonight is their first official show, where they’ll be playing along with College Kids (Library Voices’ Carl Johnson backed by Andy Shauf and Avery and Darryl Kissick).

I’m basing a lot of that off “What You Want”, a track from Spoils debut EP that they recorded with Jamie Deal, formerly of Ghosts of Modern Man. The Spoils is fronted by Riva Farrell Racette who you might remember as a bassist and vocalist in seminal Regina band Sylvie. I definitely hear a through line from that act to this one. “What You Want” is a hard-edged rock song with all the right post-hardcore influences.

Want to hear for yourself? The band’s letting me post the song here, for you to stream or download. Go for it.

As I mentioned in this issue’s Sound Check column, the last time I saw Riva was when she opened for Erin Passmore at her release show for the Downtown EP. If “What You Want” is any indication, she’s gone tighter and way more rocking with the Spoils.

If you miss the Spoils tonight at the Artful Dodger, you can catch them on December 26 at O’Hanlon’s, playing with Def 3.

(Also, I’ve posted this song to my own Soundcloud account, which is why there’s a photo of a handsome baby in a bow tie and not a more representative pic. Apologies.) - Prairie Dog

"Omfest 2 Review"

More gear is shuffled in an increasingly boggling stage swap – I am amazed that the logistics of cramming five groups into one bloated night of rock haven’t blown a gasket or burst at the seams. Regina duo The Spoils walk onstage and immediately blow the lid off the place. Crushing waves of bass mix with frantic drumming. They even cover a Yeah Yeah Yeahs song. I imagine this band will likely be getting a whole lot of attention very soon. - Ominocity

Bio

So apparently Death From Above 1979 and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs had a baby. And it's kind of a noisy one.

Spoils are a two piece, drum and bass band from Regina, Saskatchewan. Formed in the summer of 2012, band members weren't entirely certain whether things would remain a two-some. However, as things progressed, it became apparent to Riva Racette (formerly of Sylvie) and Dustin Gamracy that this little two-piece sounds a lot like a three, or even four piece band.

Since playing their first shows, Spoils have experienced that immediate type of draw that few new bands get to experience. The swift and positive response has been a welcome surprise. Dustin and Riva have been active members of the indie rock scene for well over a decade. Collectively, these two have played and toured with such notables as Minus the Bear, DFA 1979, Fucked Up, Wintersleep, Ghosts of Modern Man, METZ, and Young Widows. This summer saw Spoils head out west with post-punk band Despistado for their reunion tour. Spoils are heading to Seattle early February 2014 to record an ep with Matt Bayles former member of Minus the Bear and who's recorded bands like Mastadon and The Sword.
