"Sprawlhunt – Nassau Bet"

Brothers Tobi and Chris immigrated from Nigeria to Toronto in 2001, and in 2010 started making music under the name Sprawlhunt. Influenced by '60s and '70s-era rock and the raw, quick-fire style of punk, the two combined these styles with their love of hip-hop, conceptualizing a narrative-driven album based on a motorcycle gang. Today, tune into their latest offering "Nassau Bet," the dark-toned thumper with multi-layered production and skillful flow. Let us know what you think. - DAVIS HUYNH

"Sprawlhunt drops bombs on "Suede Bomber"[Premiere]"

Toronto, as of late, has experience a sharp rise in hip-hop activity as local artists have burst onto the international hip-hop scene. With this rise in activity out of Toronto comes a wide breadth of diverse talent that doesn’t curate to one collective “Toronto Sound”. One of the most diverse and unique acts comings out of the Six is Sprawlhunt— a rap-producer duo with an edgy punk-rock-inspired aesthetic.

Sprawlhunt’s most recent release, “Suede Bomber” showcases just this aesthetic. With production featuring break-beat drums, and distorted guitar samples, “Suede Bomber” exudes an air of apprehension as Sprawlhunt unleashes a stream of abrasive lyrics that clearly exhibit their punk rock influence. Sprawlhunt themselves describe the subject material of the track as a “response to society’s apprehensive ‘good people’”, a response which resonates with the ideals of the 90’s punk rock movement. Sprawlhunt’s distinct blend of hip hop can be likened to that of the hip hop styling’s of British punk artist King Krule, whose sound has been meet with a surge of acceptance and appreciation. Although Sprawlhunt is relatively unknown, a listen through their debut project Of Guts and Glory, is indicative of the mass amount of potential Sprawlhunt has and attributes to the prospect of Sprawlhunt being as big as King Krule himself.

"MOKB Premiere : Sprawlhunt : “Cut/Patterns”"

Hip-Hop in Toronto has been burgeoning as of late. One of the acts to come through the cracks is the duo Sprawlhunt. They mix their passion of ’60s and ’70s rock and punk with a lyrical flow creating an all-out attack on the listener.

With these touch points, they have created a narrative-driven album based on two Vietnam veterans who are unable to cope with the civillian world, eventually leading them to join up with a motorcycle gang and they negative forces that pull them in the wrong direction. Their latest track “Cut/Patterns” is a duel single and furthers this story. It fully showcases their spectrum of influences and versatility musically with promise ahead for the project. Listen below. - MOKB

Nigerian-born Toronto natives, Sprawlhunt, have been making some noise over the past few months, creating some high quality punk-rock inspired hip-hop. Their newest offering, "Nassau Bet", is a booming narrative powered by distorted 808s and off kilter percussion. As the duo spit out some ominously sinister bars, organized chaos morphs and melds around their increasingly visceral flows. Sonically layered, impulsive in both edge and structure, Sprawlhunt's new joint is made for late night-leather jacket-bottle full of Hennessy type-mischief. - Zach Henderson

Feeling a bit camera shy

Sprawlhunt are 22 and 20 year old Toronto-based brothers, Tobi and Christopher Soetan. The rap duo began with a few self-released titles including a mixtape in 2013. Prior to that, each worked on projects producing and DJing respectively. Sprawlhunt is distinctive in every way, and have created a heavy sound that combines elements of vintage analog recording styles with their outlook for the future of studio recordings.
