So Sweet the Hour has a leg up on its pop competition already. We hear about band members meeting in high school and then polishing their sound as they approach adulthood. The boys who make up So Sweet the Hour met in junior high and quickly launched their music career in San Antonio.
Last summer, the band recorded its first EP, Ready When You Are, which was self-released. So Sweet the Hour caught the attention of Grammy-nominated producer Mack Damon, who worked with the band on its first full-length album A Better Way to Say Okay.
Guitarist Matt Zavala, originally from McAllen, started playing the six-string when he was 11 years old. Though Matt moved to San Antonio with his mother more than a decade ago, he has strong family connections to the Valley, and he always looks forward to visiting.
So Sweet the Hour’s CD release party, held at the White Rabbit in San Antonio earlier this year, drew more than 900 people who showed up to support the band, making So Sweet the Hour the only local band to sell out the venue.

Full of 14- and 15-year-olds, So Sweet the Hour has more talent than you can shake a stick at, and they can only get better.
After a year together, the five-piece pop band from San Antonio made their debut with the EP Ready When You Are and announced they're here to stay.
Pop is the best word to describe their sound, but pop is such a broad genre. The first band to compare So Sweet the Hour to would be Jimmy Eat World. These kids know how to play their instruments. The four (wait, no, five ... there's a bonus track!) songs on their EP have catchy hooks and great beats.
The slow build up of the first track, "Manhattan", is the perfect pick for introducing this band to a new listener. The song bounces through the verses, with the guitars punctuating each line. The chorus is sweet and infectious.
More than anything, I look forward to seeing how this band progresses and what they produce as they mature. Ready When You Are has a few tracks that are fun and addicting, all wrapped up in a clean little package.
