"Staasia Daniels Whatever Happens Happens"

"I'm just tired of overthinking, you know. Overthinking kills a lot of things."

As Staasia Daniels continues to impress and build her discography — 2018 EP Mood Roulette was sharp, 2016's Hidden Gems was eye-opening and the smattering of independent singles and videos in-between ("Peanut Butter," "Never Fade") have established credibility — her latest six-track EP, Whatever Happens Happens, sees the Toronto singer-songwriter in a place where career aspirations and progression are valid questions.

Daniels appears to be in a carefree mindset, however, content on passionately creating music and seeing where things go from there. Not that she isn't being proactive about being successful: the emotional braggadocio and heft of "Drench," and the meditative, reflexive mode of "Grow," reflect a maturing, self-aware artist. The texture of bedroom production — writing, recording, mixing — sets the tone and a level of accessibility and intimacy, as the breathy, undulating electronics maintain a rough-edged, yet vulnerable, flavour of R&B.

Daniels' songwriting continues to evolve: a complex, ambitious track like "Inconsistency" goes in on emotional availability ("Now I gotta go fix my heart again") and switches things up mid-song with percussive chants and a relationship post-mortem." This vibe continues on "Privilege," an assessment on emotional entanglement and fallout. Staasia Daniels continues to grow and evolve and hopes her growing following will be along for the journey, no matter where the road may go. (Independent) - Ryan B Patrick

"Staasia Daniels Put Her Foot In This One"

Staasia Daniels has been a favorite of mine for a minute. She blends a lot of energies and puts them back into the universe for the world to enjoy. I once described her as a mix between Aaliyah and Jhene Aiko, which still fits to this day. With that in mind, her latest EP, Whatever Happens, Happens shows a newfound maturity and sexiness to her tracks. And no, I'm not just talking about the cover art.

While she's always been mature and sexy with her songs and songwriting, here things just hit differently (in a good way, of course). It could be that the first song on the project, "Drench," is highly slow wind-friendly and definitely NSFW. It could be that she's consistently perfecting her craft, experimenting with melodies and a this-is-R&B-where-people-actually-sang feel with her songs, even when she's brash and talking her ish. It could be that she doesn't know how to make a bad song.

Either way, Whatever Happens, Happens is worth a listen and may help you get some late-night come through--or it may just have you and your significant other just vibing to Daniels' voice, which is as strong as ever, and her subject matter (which talks about love, like, lust, and how those things keep people either coming back into awkward situations or how to break the chains of just being used and then cast aside).

Check out the project below and remember to support dope music in all its forms. - STOBMusic

"Artists You Should Know"

Staasia Daniels has been putting in work for a few years now. Pulling from past influences like Aaliyah, she formulates a sound that harkens back to early 2000s R&B. Her Soundcloud account is filled with soul, and as a nice added bonus, she’s electric live. - COMPLEX CA

"5 SONGS WE'RE DIGGING"

STAASIA DANIELS NAPTIME (GSX)
Depending on how many hours of sleep you get a night, the idea of nap time might not be sexy in itself. But Staasia Daniels's far-from-sleepy vocal performance is enough to change our minds. When the anticipation to see your beloved is too great and the only way to be with them is in dreams, going to sleep becomes an act of love. Muted keys and lingering bass add to the relaxed, minimal vibe, which puts Daniels's voice front and centre. The song is from the Brampton native's Hidden Gems EP, which dropped earlier this month. - NOW TORONTO NEWSPAPER

"Listen to Staasia Daniels debut EP - Hidden Gems"

The project is full of good ol’, oozy slow jams; songs like“Never Fade” and “Shell Life” have 1990s slow jam-style while tracks such as “Only A Few” and “WISA” feature more of today’s slowie style.

"Staasia Daniels- Never Fade"

" This is Staasia Daniels the beautiful and talented artist from Toronto, Canada. Her voice may be soft and easy to match the curve and texture of her body but it will heat up any room. Staasia is what the music industry needs. From the videos I have watched of her she shows a ordinary girl side but in photos and music she seems like the chick everyone was scared to speak to in high school. Never Fade- lyrics below " -

"THISISR&B"

Toronto’s Staasia Daniels has a little something for a lazy summer afternoon. As the R&B songstress is preparing for the release of her new EP series A Turtle On Skates, she is giving listens a taste of what’s to come with the short but sweet “Back to the Basics.”

Jacking the beat to the smooth hip hop record “My N**ga Jus Made Bail” by Bas featuring J.Cole, the Black Canadian Awards nominated singer keeps it raw on the breezy joint.

Describing the inspiration behind the remix Staasia says, “When you’ve just had enough of the b.s, the fugazi people, and realize in order to hold your composure, you’ve gotta say “NO” to negativity… and YES to you. Bring it back to the basics…. take care of your self.”

"Staasia Daniels- Never Fade"

Staasia Daniels is back with a great track about love staying strong through the good and bad times. The opening line, You can catch my breath/When you feel you’re running out is a beautiful one because it gives you the feeling that, even in his down moments, she would rather be with him than anyone else. Even the fact that she wants to go get barbeque with him is a great image because it means they enjoy the simple things together. The songs is aided expertly by the Tony Sway production, which gives a chill feeling to the track about a non-stressful relationship. Daniels’ vocals are the star, though, starting off with a sensual tone that gets a little stronger before the end but doesn’t overpower the track. You feel like she is serenading the one she loves from the booth.

"GSX a hit at SXSW"

BRAMPTON — Three Brampton artists had the experience of a lifetime while performing their biggest show yet at South by Southwest (SXSW).

At what is considered to be one of the largest indie music festivals in the world, Game Starts Here ("X" marks the spot) Music, or GSX Music, joined in, representing Canada amongst hundreds of performers representing their own countries and musical cultures.

"When you're onstage and performing, time moves differently and you're in a totally different world," said Xpress aka DJXP, a DJ and music producer with GSX. "All preparation you've done becomes mute and you and the audience is all you see."

Artists Xpress, EverythingOShauN and Staasia Daniels performed their music on March 21 to "people who had no idea who we were - and they loved it," said Xpress.

"I don't actually remember what it was like, it all just went by so fast," said Daniels. "It was like I was having a dream, seeing these people who came out to hear dope music, vibe and move with me."

Xpress explained it as an "earth-shattering experience," and said SXSW was a major milestone for them.

"We were miles away from home and in the heart of Texas doing what we love," he said. "In that moment we weren't reaching for goals or success, we were it. We made it. In that moment we had arrived."

Xpress said the GSX label started up between 2011 and 2012 when he and his brother, OShauN, got together and started collaborating.

The two had been immersed into music at a young age and kept at it as they got older, listening to various genres but gravitating towards hip-hop.

They later got in contact with Daniels whom Xpress had met in 2009 while studying Independent Music Production at Seneca College.

Although music is a tough industry to get into, Daniels said, it has been worth it.

"We've all had those moments of frustration and just want to throw the towel in, but music isn't separate from me," she said.

"My motivation is simply the sound of music, there are so many stories to tell, and not just my own."

In terms of their music, Xpress said, "I don't believe in having just one genre.

"Some days you want to have a nice slow song, but then another day you want to turn up or something," he said. "You need to provide yourself with that balance,"

Both Daniels and OShauN are currently working on projects; A Turtle in Limbo is Daniels', and Until Then is OShauN's.

"Every time I release new music it's a big moment," said Daniels.

"It's nerve wracking because I'm putting myself out there to be judged, to be liked, to be hated, to be. But those little moments make the bigger moments happen."

All three artists will be performing together in the upcoming months.

They will be opening for Mario's show - Spring Break Out 2015 Concert Mario Live in Brooklyn, NY on April 24.

They will also be headlining at the Amityville Music Hall in New York on April 28 and are hoping to perform locally in May and June.

With all that is happening, GSX is "always looking to collaborate, work with other artists, looking to be booked as well as looking for people to work with GSX Music like investors and partners," said Xpress.

"Premiere: Staasia Daniels"

After premiering her latest single "Laid Off" last week, Staasia Daniels returns to deliver her debut project, Hidden Gems. The new EP is rife with smoothness, which is something we have come to expect from the rising Brampton native. On Hidden Gems, the R&B songstress clearly isn't afraid to flex her vocal talent, pairing melodic runs over airy and atmospheric production.
