"Confront Magazine - Album Review -9/10 - Something Left Unexplained"

Stareblind: Something Left Unexplained

Stareblind’s an interesting one. Part of Montreal’s Metal community, Stareblind sounds far more like Grunge or Hard Rock to my ear. They remind me a lot of early Soundgarden with a touch of Alice In Chains in terms of their musical styling and vocal content.

They run the gamut from roaring, screaming “modern” Metal vocals, to raw harmonizing, and their guitar work can either be manic, raking or take a plodding “Seattle” style tempo. Drumming is subdued and left in the background, while the vocals and raw electric guitar do most of the work. Every now and again they throw brief, looped electronic somethings at your ears, or step back and let the drums and guitar forward to play in the spotlight a bit, just to keep you guessing about what’s coming up next.

Metal music either tends to get it right or get it really, really wrong. Likewise, it can also be innovative and fresh, or downright generic and stale. Stareblind succeed in accomplishing what they set out to do, which is to offer their own unique take on post-Grunge Metal.

This is definitely a crossover album; despite its Metal label, ‘Something Left Unexplained’ is the sort of album that will be enjoyed by Pop, Rock and even possibly the Emo and Goth crowds. These guys could be the next Seether, if they get the attention they deserve.

"Rockstar Weekly - Album Review"

Stareblind - Something Left Unexplained
By Dan Savoie
RockStar Weekly

Stareblind - Something Left UnexplainedSomething Left Unexplained is a strong debut from Montreal alternative metal band Stareblind. It’s crunchy, powerful and unrelenting in similar ways to Alice In Chains, Korn or even Soundgarden, but with a strong European flavor.

The music can be best described as post-grunge. It’s the CD we would have expected from a band that has lived through the grunge era looking for a new modern sound.

There are definite grunge elements to the music, with its song structures and vocal style, but they’ve developed them further with the use of metal elements like screams, shredding and slick production. There’s even an occasional burst of electronic loops to liven the sound a bit. It’s a CD that will most likely leave you guessing what comes next.

From the sheer power of the opening track Shelter, to the slightly softer-side of Embrace, the CD might have a difficult time pleasing pure metal enthusiasts looking for straight ahead Black Sabbath-like crunch, but will be a great addition to those searching for the next generation of grunge-metal.

With a new Alice In Chains release hitting the stores this fall, Stareblind will have a great shot at getting on contemporary rock radio when programmers discover that Canada has a band that can rival the Alice boys.

Stareblind - Something Left Unexplained
Review by Zeke The Freak

www.myspace.com/stareblindonline

Stareblind is a Montreal quartet that isn’t afraid to use the influence of their favourite bands. The band consists of Jake Bergeron-guitar, Manu Guilbault-vocals, Oli Beaudoin-drums and Dan Coole-bass.

My opening line is an accurate one. I hear elements of a few of my favourite metal bands, yet it doesn’t sound derivative or contrived at all. It feels honest to me, and that is the first rule in my opinion. For those of you who don’t know, there are only twelve notes in the western music scale. Anyone can make a case that everyone sounds like someone else if they try hard enough. The question, as I stated, ‘Is it honest?’

This disc is! From the first note, there is an intensity, almost ferocity that you rarely hear these days. The songs are well crafted and produced in way that fit the songs, as opposed to a producer imposing their own will on the project. It was produced by Jiak (5 Line Legacy, Tantrumn), recorded and mixed by Louis Martin (Forty Birds, Everything After Zero).

I’m really digging this disc. I haven’t stopped listening to it since I got it. If the heavy stuff is your bag, I would recommend you buy it. There is a lot to explore from the rhythms to the dark lyrical content. Another cool thing about this band is that they are a band. “All music and lyrics composed by Stareblind” is what is says in the CD insert. I respect that very much. It’s not about who did what or why, it’s just about the music. You can get a taste on their Myspace, and find out how to get their disc. They’ll be in Toronto in October, and I’m really looking forward to that show.

I’ve said my piece, now you be the judge.

"Stareblind Album Review"

I often discuss with friends about how few numetal releases there are these days, it's not like in the early 2000 when it was like a wetdream for most numetal freaks.
So it is with much joy I present Montreal based StareBlind and their debut "Something left unexplained", an album filled with downtuned riffs and aggressive vocals backed up by a tight rhythm section.
StareBlind's sound remind of the early era of this genre with bands like Mudvayne, Sevendust, KoRn and Deftones.
And it's not only about the right sound here, these guys write good songs too.
Just listen to the title track "Something left unexplained" or my favorite "Shapes", why not crank up the volume to the mighty "Hollow" or start any iPod mix with "Embrace".
Great album!

"Xplosive Metal Interview"

Date: September 17th, 2009
Band Member Interviewed: Manu Guibault - vocals
Interviewed By: Caroline Restiaux

XM: First off, why not get our readers up to date on how the band got together and if this has been the line up from the beginning.
Manu: The band started as a side project. We were playing for fun, covering our favorite bands. We started writing our own stuff, and slowly got into it more seriously. This is the original line up, except for Dan, who is a long-time friend but joined forces last spring when our original bassist quit playing music.

XM: How would you best describe your sound to those who still haven’t gotten the chance to hear you yet?
Manu: We stand on the crossroads between alternative, rock and metal. We have very various influences: nu-metal, grunge, old-school metal, alternative, progressive metal, to name a few.

XM: You have released “Something Left Unexplained” this year. Great cd! What was the recording process like for you guys?
Manu: It was a never ending learning process. We learned a lot about sound, gears and technique, of course, but we also learned a lot about ourselves as musician, writers and human beings. This adventure made us all grow as people but also made Stareblind evolve as a unit.

XM: Is there a particular label that you are hoping to get the attention of?
Manu: We only want to play our music and be heard. If that implies being signed with a label, then go for it. We're not looking for stardom, money or the infamous rock'n roll lifestyle. All that matters to us is the music, and we'll do what we have to do to keep doing it.

XM: When playing a live show do you guys have any rituals yet that you perform before going out?
Manu: We have our little routine: we stretch out, do physical and vocal warm ups, we focus on the show and concentrate to be in the appropriate state of mind to give the best performance we can. It's basically a matter of being mentally right there, right on time.

XM: What do you like best when you perform live? Has there been any mishaps during a live performance?
Manu: The best thing ever is feeling the crowd pulse with the music, it's feeling that people are united on the same vibe. Of course, we had a our share of empty places, crappy bars and bad sound gear, but it's part of the game. Like they say: shit happens.

XM: What is your most memorable gig experience and why?
Manu: It's probably our album launch. It was in a bar in our hometown, the place was packed to the roof, and that feeling of the crowd pulsing as a whole with the music was absolutely there. The energy we felt that night was amazing.

XM: Could you give our readers some insight on the indie metal scene in Montreal?
Manu: There are a lot of really great bands in Montreal. The bands share the same jam spaces, exchange gigs and party together. We know and support each other.

XM: Do any of the members in the band speak French? If so have you ever considered recording a song in French?
Manu: We all do, but our music just don't sound right in French. Maybe it's just a matter of influences: none of us actually listened to a lot of French music. Singing in English is just natural to us.

XM: I ask all the bands that I interview this question. “If you could have been involved in the writing, recording or production of any album which would it be and why?”
Manu: It would probably be one of those three: L.D. 50 (Mudvayne), Lateralus (Tool), The Great Cold Distance (Katatonia). Those three albums are just completely insane and unique. They all have something different, and they all come with something that we couldn't find anywhere else.

XM: Which artist would you like to record a song with and why?
Manu: Probably Maynard James Keenan, from Tool and A Perfect Circle. This guy is always on the this line between being a freak and a genious, and that is really inspiring. He's also one of the greatest singer out there.

XM: In life many things come for free, what has been your most expensive lesson?
Manu: Probably a few gigs that were hours and hours of car away from montreal, and that didn't paid the gas money that was promised. We consider ourselves lucky though: we can easily imagine worse scenarios.

XM: How important is it to you to stay close to your fans?
Manu: It's the number two on the list: the number one is to stay true to ourselves. Once that we are happy with what we do, the most important thing - before critics, money, fame or whatever - is our fans, since they are the ones that allow us to do what we do.

XM: Where do you see “Stareblind” in 5 years from now?
Manu: A second or third album launched, always more passion for what we do and an ever growing fan community!

XM: I will leave the last bit up to you!
Manu: First let's define "metal" for us: being authentic, making no compromise, being aware of what's around and staying opened to everything. That being said: keep it metal folks!
