BandRockSinger/Songwriter

STARK is an original hard rock trio fronted by singer/bassist Lani Ford. Playing their own mixture of metal, blues, punk and country, STARK has released three full-length albums. Lani Ford also plays solo acoustic and will release a side project soon. The band has toured in the US and the UK.

Biography

"STARK rises far above any female fronted punk rock band we've heard because Ford and company push the paper-cutting envelope so far that your tongue bleeds with the pleasure of honest raw rock and roll. The result is exaltation in the effort. So refreshing."--earbuzz.com

New York City-based hard rock trio STARK has evolved quite a bit since the inception of the band in 2003 by front-woman Lani Ford. The singer/songwriter/bassist still brings a pop sensibility to original songs that have now been metalized by the addition of Joe Hogan to the group in 2007. The guitarist has engineered and mixed all three STARK studio albums. On Race To The Floor, the sound is melodic and intriguing but much heavier. STARK represents the working class with hillbilly and punk rock overtones, solid vocals and shredding guitars. Straight ahead rock with a sawtooth edge—metal soul. Lani Ford likes to tell stories that tend to speak to the underdogs of the world with fierce, raw feminine power. She has an intense honesty and sense of humor that shows plight and redemption all at once.

Keeping their angst in tact, STARK has matured into a hard rock band that will remind you of a 70's radio station. However, STARK is edgy and modern enough to appeal to all kinds of people of all ages. STARK was formed by Lani Ford with Dylan Grewen on guitar and Greg Schiff on drums. The trio recorded and released the debut CD "The Curse" in 2004. In 2008, with Josette on guitar and Rob Endemann on drums, STARK recorded and released "Put It To Your Head" with guest backing vocalist Pam "The Metal Queen" Grande. Joe Hogan engineered and mixed both CD's and was the logical choice when STARK's first chance to tour England came up in early 2008. After filling in on guitar for the tour, Joe joined the band permanently on guitar and recently engineered and mixed the new CD by STARK called "Race To The Floor". Recorded analog like the others and definitely the heaviest CD yet, Race To The Floor was released March 13, 2010. A total DIY project, drummer Eric Robel did the artwork and Lani Ford did just about everything else. The band now has three full-length sudio CDs available on CDBaby and iTunes. STARK returned to England for a 3rd time in June 2010.

STARK is not your typical “girl-fronted” band. This is a band you do not want writing a song about you, unless you’re one of the two junkies arguing over who “Nothing’s Wrong” is written about. After three tours in the UK, three full-length studio CD’s, several high-profile gigs in the NYC metro area, appearances at CMJ and the GoGirls Invasion of SXSW, STARK’s founder and frontwoman Lani Ford has been busy with press and radio campaigns for Race To The Floor. She is also preparing an acoustic multi-instrument album and a solo project. She will return for her second solo acoustic tour in Southern California in November 2010. The band is busy working on new material as well as organizing tours for 2011.

STARK has appeared live on the Jim Breuer Raw Dog radio show on Sirius radio. Also on Sirius, STARK has been played numerous times on Genya Ravan’s show Chicks and Broads on the Little Steven Underground Garage channel. STARK recently played a Haiti benefit with WRXP in New York. All three STARK albums have had international radio, TV and internet airplay and sales. Lani Ford appeared with Gary Garver (formerly of Howard Stern’s show) in Los Angeles on Rockmetv.com. The band has played on the same bill as The Dollyrots, The Blackhearts (of Joan Jett &), Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group, Sami Yaffa and Syl Sylvain of the New York Dolls, Patti Rothberg, Gin Blossoms, 3 Kisses (known from Wife Swap on ABC) and many more. This hard-working band has had a lot of fun and a lot of bad luck. But they are more than survivors, they’re fighters and thrivers.

Lani did her stint as good girl for years on Fox 5 as Good Day New York’s traffic reporter and as a commercial and stage actress. When Lani moved from Texas to New York to pursue acting, the fact that she would form a band that would rise through the Lower East Side trenches to become the new classic rock was purely a fantasy. Thank someone (a lot of someones actually) Lani crossed paths with the mighty “Sonic” Joe Hogan on the first STARK album. Even luckier, after Joe engineered the second STARK CD, Hogan galvanized the band by touring to the UK then joining as the permanent guitar player. Together, Hogan and Ford have combined their love of real songs and widely diverse musical tastes to create the version of STARK that appears on album 3, Race To The Floor. If you loved 70’s FM radio or just have a taste for straight up rock and roll, STARK is right up your alley. The band has been metalized, heavier but with the fun and darkness that has remained consistent in the wild world of STARK. There have been crazy times when Lani told everyone off from the stage, poured beer on her head, or took her top off and there h

Lyrics

I Pay

Written By: Lani Ford

Man in the moon why you laughing at me?
What did I do to you? Why won't you let me be?
I worked hard all my life just to get something better.
Dotted each i, crossed each t to the letter
CHORUS
And I don't see any way
that this can be okay
there's nothing left to say
so I pay, I pay
I need to sleep but I can't close my eyes.
I'm in too deep, I've told too many lies.
I have discovered nothing matters at all.
No one can love you and you'll miss your call.
CHORUS
And I don't see any way
that this can be okay
there's nothing left to say
so I pay, I pay
I know the taste of infection when inspiration becomes decay.
Despite your desperation, I play
and I pay
Man in the moon where did you disappear?
Didn't I love you? Did I make myself clear?
I have endangered the best of my friends.
With unbridled anger, I've reached the end.
CHORUS
And I don't see any way
that this can be okay
there's nothing left to say
so I pay, I pay
I pay, I pay.

18 Again

18 AGAIN
Lani Ford
㦠2005

VERSE 1:
18 again with malicious intent
So many stories I don¡¦t need to invent
The drummer seemed to like it, the bass player did too
But I like the guitarist too bad
He don¡¦t like you, oh no

CHORUS:
So I put him on the shelf and took home someone else
And was left all by myself the wind taken out of my sails
No boyfriend for my birthday but plenty of lonely madness
They¡¦re home with their girlfriends while I clean up the damn mess

VERSE 2:
And struggle with my darkness might be forced to confess
But I¡¦ll do my darndest to be remembered as the best

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
Too tough to care you can see my underwear
Too rough to bear the childish antics everywhere
Too much to be the one to take it personally
And too soon you¡¦ll see it¡¦s cool to have no self-esteem

VERSE 3:
I think about drinking first thing in the morning
Does that make me stressed out or just an alcoholic

CHORUS
The damn mess

OH NO!

Written By: Lani Ford, 2005

CHORUS:

Oh no
Don’t let me feel this
Oh no
Don’t put me through this
Oh no
Don’t make me go through this
Again
Oh no
Don’t love me like this
Oh no
I can’t jump in like this
Oh no
Don’t hurt me like this
Again
Oh no!

VERSE 1:
I see that look in your eyes
I see you forming your lies
Already see the where’s and why’s
To get me over
You seem to be the right size
Have all the perfect alibis
You’ll have me to criticize
When it’s over

CHORUS

VERSE 2:
You’ve been hurt visibly
You’ve got issues I can see
You have scars that seem to be
completely blinded
You seem to like my misery
Think how it could be
But if I stay you’ll have to be
Completely blinded

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
So don’t come any closer (get away)
Don’t put your arms around me
Don’t come any closer (get away)
Don’t try to unground me
Don’t come any closer (get away)
Don’t think you can confound me
Don’t come any closer
Don’t let your love surround me

OH NO!
OH NO!
OH NO!
OH NO!
OH NO!
OH NO!
OH NO!
OH NO!

On The Edge

Written By: Lani Ford

On The Edge

Verse:
Code black, heart attack

Can’t seem to get together my act

I’m sacked, out of whack

Don’t see anyway I can hold back

Oh yeah

Oh yeah

Oh yeah, yeah

On the edge!

Chorus:
I’m out to win

So I’m gonna thicken my skin

And fly, fly

On the edge of a barstool

On the edge of a breakdown

On the edge of disaster
On the edge of a meltdown

Verse 2:
Steamed heat, can’t seem to reach
Every thing I do just goes breech
Cold breeze, total unease
Give me another one I can’t please
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah, yeah
On the edge!

Chorus

Thicken my skin
Dig my heels in
Stick it right in
And fly high

CHORUS

On the edge, on the edge, on the edge, yeah, yeah, yeah
On the edge, on the edge, on the edge, on the edge!

Get It

GET IT
© 2004
LANI FORD

VERSE 1:
I'm sorry
doesn't work anymore
yeah, you're sorry
I've heard that one before
so sorry
but I can't take it no more
This story
has become such a bore
You need me
what can I do you for
You feed me
your bullshit and lore
You see me
as another dumb whore
You bleed me
You've become such a snore

CHORUS:
You don’t get to have me, get it?
You don’t get to get me, got it?
You don’t get to have me, get it?
Get it? Got it?
Good!

VERSE 2:
You think
I can help you
You drink
On the soul I once knew
The brink
Of more junk to do
You sink
Your lies with the truth
Your eyes
Give your demons away
Can’t buy
Anything that you say
Good-bye
Is now the only way
I’ll fly
Before you drag me astray
CHORUS:
You don’t get to have me, get it?
You don’t get to get me, got it?
You don’t get to have me, get it?
Get it? Got it?
Good!

BRIDGE:
So now you're a jerk
since the sex factor's gone
Your feelings are hurt
cuz i wasn't turned on
you say you're my friend
but you treat me like crap
now you won't bend
thought you were better than that

CHORUS:
You don’t get to have me, get it?
You don’t get to get me, got it?
You don’t get to have me, get it?
Get it? Got it?
Good!

CHORUS:
You don’t get to have me, get it?
You don’t get to get me, got it?
You don’t get to have me, get it?
Get it? Got it?
Good!

End Of The Line

Written By: Lani Ford

END OF THE LINE
©Lani Ford/STARK 2008

Verse 1:
9 hours from Mom’s to Memphis
9 more and I’ll be missin’ ‘em
but at least I got my dog
Lots of highways and freaks between us
But you know I’ll still be seein’ ya
No more time lost in the fog

Chorus:
Going to see
What’s waitin’ for me
At the end of the line
Going to be
What’s best for me
In the prime of my life
At this time in my life

Verse 2:
2 roomies, 3 bags, and 10 days
and so the decision was made
leave your paycheck at the door
As children we all start innocent
But as adults we all are broken
Leave the pieces on the floor

CHORUS

Alt. CHORUS

Verse 3:
The big city can seem so evil
But in reality every place is cruel
Keep the baggage on your back
Who know what will lie in store
When tomorrow comes beggin’ back for more
Keep your belongings in a sack

INTRO

VERSE 1:
He was the only guy I almost murdered ever
He went postal when he found out he was a father
Then he got drunk
And tried to beat me up
So I decided there and then not to even bother

CHORUS:
It is what it is
CanÕt be what it wonÕt
It is what it is
CanÕt change it if we donÕt
It is what it is
CanÕt make it what itÕs not
It is what it is
A little is a lot

VERSE 2:
So he drove his car 10 feet deep into the river
Smashed his face up pretty good when he bashed it in the rearview mirror
And then he showed up
And tried to get rough
And as his head spun around my thoughts became much clearer

CHORUS
SOLO

Alt CHORUS:

It is what it is
CanÕt be what it wonÕt
It is what it is
CanÕt change it if we donÕt
What will be will be
CanÕt make it what itÕs not
We are who we are
WeÕre just one little hot spot

He was the only guy I almost married ever
He freaked out when he found out he was a father

Stay With Me

Written By: Lani Ford

I depend on the kindness of strangers
in my life I have seen some dangers
I've been tempted by the pleasure
of an apple from the trees
I have tasted the sunrise
from high-rise balconies
But I have never been affected
like the way you get to me
You're my partner in crime
You're my sweet harmony
You're like the sound of cicadas
Serenading me
I hope you'll
Stay With Me
Stay With Me

The bend in the road has been delicious
Despite all the curves that were vicious
I've plucked all the roses
and avoided all the thorns
I have sprouted some wings
and grown me some horns
but I have never been affected
like the way you get to me
You're my partner in crime
You're my sweet harmony
You're like the sound of cicadas
Singing just for me
I hope you'll
Stay With Me
Stay With Me

I been waiting for you baby
I was wondering when you would come
You've been searching for me darling
Now I want you to bring it home
I been drowning in the Sahara darling
I been choking on a bitter weed
I beg you stay right here right now
I got something you need to feed
Yeah
Yeah
Stay With Me
Stay With Me
Stay With Me
Stay, Stay

Starr Tucker:
STARK featuring Lani Ford has style. Lani has a wonderful deep, sexy voice. This is a knock out CD. Rich and heartfelt that reflects her cool Texas heritage. You can hear a wonderful twang in the painful lyrics. The Curse brings it all home. A definite must in any sound station.
