Stateliner

Stateliner

BandRockAmericana

Stateliner is a roots-rock band that, at times, is more rock than roots, but can effectively convey the roots aspect with a more acoustic, natural sound. Stateliner's best attributes are honest, introspective songwriting, assorted appropriate instrumentation, and strong musicianship.

Biography

In a spectrum ranging from acoustic driven roots-rock with bluegrass and country influences to aggressive rock, stateliner positions itself somewhere in the middle. Chris Wood (keyboards), Donny Davidson (vocals), Brandon Epps (guitar/background vocals), and Sam Martin (bass/background vocals) organized in September of 2005 in Nashville, TN and picked up percussionist Brady Beard in 2009. With a sound that is difficult to define, stateliner has found its closest description in roots rock.

If the genre is hard to define, it is because honesty usually comes in many forms but is inherently relatable. The content of the songs themselves is an introspective reflection of the lives these individuals have led. "We write about things we've experienced. If we sing about it, it's because we've done it." Donny explains. When you walk into the spaces that stateliner has created, you know what you are walking into and the things that you are walking, sometimes running, away from. That's what music is to these individuals, something that aides during life, something that answers questions, and occasionally asks them. stateliner exists because each of its members has something to say and believe music is the only way to convey it. stateliner leaves the audience knowing that they've definitely heard the songs of men who've lived and who might not make the best choices, but write and play the things they know.

Spaces

Written By: Davidson/Epps

Spaces

I'm hanging on these side rails
In between the sun and you
I'm holding on to nothing here
Don't know just what I do

Been lying here with glass eyes
I'm dying here no sleep
I'm holding on to nothing
You’re holding onto

And I can see you standing
But I just mostly bleed
Sometimes I see you staring
A hole in me

Been swimming with my eyes closed
Ain't coming up to breathe
But I'm holding on something
You can't hold onto

And I can see you standing
But I just always bleed
Sometimes I see you staring at me

I been hanging on these side rails
But they always disappear
I'm running out of spaces
Everything is turning clear
I'm running out of spaces
Everything is turning

And I can see you standing
But I sit here and bleed
Sometimes I see you staring
At a hole inside me
A hole inside me
A hole inside me
A hole inside me

Last Time

Written By: Davidson/Epps

Taken underneath the air
I barely breathe
I hate me for being here in between

I do not know your name
But I bought you clothes to wear
You do not remember
I do not know you

Mainline throughout yesterday
Got lost again
Last time I am not afraid
To die again

I do not know your face
But I stumbled in your room
You whispered like you were me
But I do not know you

I do not know your face
But I stumbled in your room
You whispered like you were me
But I do not know you

You do not remember
That I bought you clothes to wear
You do not know my face
But I do not know you

Love Lies

Written By: Davidson/Wood

Unlock the door your leaning towards
And clarify my day
All the words I knew before
I underestimate
Yes I am so afraid now

Cause I hear and I deny
All the words you said
You clearly told me love lies
It’s only in my head

It’s hard to feel what was before
Cause everything got strange
The things I thought were mine are yours
And they’re always re-arranged
Yeah now this cannot be sane now

Cause I fear and I deny
All the blood I bleed
I'm nearly crawlin’ to ya
I'm only on my knees

Yes everything is clear
Oh but there ain't nothing real now

Cause I fear and I deny
All the blood I bleed
I'm nearly crawlin’ to ya
I'm always on my knees
I'm nearly crawlin’ to ya baby
I'm always on my knees

Nerves

Written By: Davidson/Martin

It's not my fault
It's not my words
It's not my only thought
you're not so clean
You're not yourself
Your eyes know that you're caught

And everyday I'm lost
I'm done almost
When everything I know is wrong

It’s not your face
I'm not so numb
I'm not the only disgrace
You're never the same
I never sleep
But I can't say the name

Everyday I crawl
Everyday I
Deny that I'm falling apart

So lay me down
Cause I am wide awake
Hold me now
If you don't mind the shake
Say my name
Cause I can't say a word
Hold me down
Cause I don't have the nerve

And all the times I tried,
Every time I
Deny that I’ve been dying inside

Lay me down
Cause I am wide awake
Hold me now
If you don't mind the shake
Say my name
Cause I can't say a word
Hold me down
Cause I don't have the nerve
