Biography

BIO (additional quotes & stats below):

Some would say it takes a heaping helping of hubris to think that any one person or group of people can truly make a difference. But State of Man sincerely believes that music has the power to change the world, and remain determined to do their part.

Formed in Atlanta in 2000, the members originally bonded over their common sense of professionalism and love of ‘90s rock legends. But unlike many young bands, who expect rapid success and give up when million-dollar deals don’t rain from the heavens, State of Man kept plugging away, racking up a series of accomplishments ranging from Battle of the Bands wins and Rolling Stone appearances to landing a single on the Billboard charts. “Every year something would happen to keep us going,” bassist James Beale recalls, “picking up momentum gradually along the way. We’ve experienced the highs and lows, but even when we encountered disappointment we all remained focused on our commitment to our goals. That’s why we’ve been together as long as we have, because we built that critical chemistry that is the foundation of every good band.”

That chemistry has never been more potent than on In This Place, State of Man’s first new album since 2006’s Both Sides of the Story. Produced by Rick Beato, the disc features a bevy of instantly memorable anthems ranging from the devotional “Be Still (My Heart)” (which the band dedicated to American soldiers stationed overseas), the universal love song “Bound In Chains,” and the conciliatory “I Have Forgiven” to the inspirational title track, a sign of the times and a song of hope and inspiration in the current world environment.

But perhaps no song on In This Place has proven more helpful than the arena-ready epic, “Swallow Your Fears.” Whether it’s a therapist playing the song to help teens in a suicide prevention program or Adam Bush, who produced a State Of Man video before dying of leukemia in February of 2008, the song has provided a beacon of hope for people caught up in life-or-death struggles, assuring them that “you don’t have to be alone” if you “swallow the things that hold you back from living life.”

“We’ve had the name State of Man for five years,” says guitarist/pianist Thomas Panza, “but I think this record really exemplifies what the name is about. It’s like a mission statement. We’re representative of where humanity is as a whole, and I think John’s lyrics reflect that. We want to lead by example and actually get our hands dirty.”

To that end, the band executed their ‘Service2Humanity Tour,’ in which they performed a form of community service in various cities before their concerts, inspiring local fans to join the and do the same. The concept originated in part from a 2007 tour in which they entertained troops in nine countries throughout Asia and the Caribbean, listening to soldiers’ stories and realizing the emotional impact of their music.

“Everybody in the band is in music because we want to make a difference somehow,” vocalist/guitarist John Stringer insists. “And we want to inspire other people to want to make a difference, especially in times like these. We’re in a very similar time to the era that produced artists like Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, where people are looking for change. We’re not trying to be anything we’re not: the bottom line is that we want to be true to who we are, and ultimately to inspire others to do the same.” For additional information, visit http://www.stateofmanmusic.com!

Bound In Chains

Written By: John Stringer, anonymous (Public domain derivative)

There’ve been times in my life
I felt so alone
I had no one to call my own
But then you came my way
Just to let me know
I’ve always got a place I can call my home

When my life was bound in chains
You set me free
You were making a way
For me
When my life was bound in chains
You set me free
You were making a way
For me

See, sometimes on this road
Things get so bad
You often feel downhearted and blue
But when you need me the most
I’ll always come through
I’ll do everything that I say that I will do

[Chorus]
When my life was bound in chains
You set me free
You were making a way
For me
When my life was bound in chains
You set me free
You were making a way
For you and me

[Bridge]
See sometimes we all get lonely
Sometimes we all need a hand
But all you need to do is call me
You know, you know
I’ll come running again

[Chorus 3 - 2x, instrumental, and then 1x]
When your life is bound in chains
I’ll set you free
I am making a way
For you and me

Swallow Your Fears

Written By: State of Man, lyrics by John Stringer

Say what you want to say
but you know there is something in the way
there's something in the way
Don't act like nothings wrong
when your past seems to haunt you every day
and you know you're so afraid to love

Swallow Your Fears
swallow the things that hold you back
that hold you back from living life
Swallow Your Fears
swallow the things that hold you back
that hold you back from living life

There's nothing you can do
to erase the wounds that only time can heal
(that only time can heal)
but all you've got to lose
is the time it takes to know how you feal
when you know you're so afraid to love

Swallow Your Fears
swallow the things that hold you back
that hold you back from living life
Swallow Your Fears
swallow the things that hold you back
that hold you back from living life

I know sometimes its hard
we all feel heartache
but if you learn to trust again
you can be from from fear
you don't have to be alone
you can find what you want
if you wash away the pain
and learn to trust again

Say what you want to say
but you know there is something in the way
always something in the way

Swallow Your Fears
swallow the things that hold you back
that hold you back from living life
Swallow Your Fears
swallow the things that hold you back
that hold you back from living life

I know sometimes its hard
we all feel heartache
but if you learn to trust again
you can be from from fear
you don't have to be alone
you can find what you want
if you wash away the pain
and learn to trust again

Swallow your fears
Swallow the things that hold you back
that hold you back form living life

Never Forget

Written By: John Stringer

-Verse 1-
Met a bum from the city of brotherly love
He moved south a few years ago
Had a wife kids and a nice house
Made a good living teaching bright young minds to grow

One fall after class was done
A kid pulled his card so he pulled his gun
See he left his nerves deep in the jungles of Nam
Now his job and his kids and his wife are gone

-Pre-chorus-
What a life
What a waste
What a shame

-Chorus-
What he lost he could never find
What he said he could never take back
What he did he could never change
What he knew he could never forget

What he lost he could never find
What he said he could never take back
What he did he could never change?
What he knew he could never forget
Never Forget

-Verse 2-
I heard about a junkie strung out from youth
The tracks on his arms told the tales of abuse
See his drug of choice was just getting high
Then he found religion and he changed his life

After four years sober started leading a group
Showing those like him how to find the truth
Then one night on a downtown high rise
Took his last hit and he tried to fly

-Pre-chorus-
-Chorus-

-Bridge -
Skeletons that we all hide
Buried deep within
Often they will come alive
Become our own demons

Skeletons that we all hide
Buried deep within
They come alive, they come alive
Become our demons

-Guitar Solo-

-Pre-chorus 2 (2x)-
Skeletons, Demons

-Chorus (2x)-

-Coda-
He could never forget
Never forget

Be Still My Heart

Written By: John Stringer

Song Title: Be Still (My Heart)

-Verse 1-
I want you to know
I have fallen on my own
I have failed to be all the things you need

I want you to see
I’ll get back eventually
There’s just someone I’ve forgotten to be

-Chorus (2x)-
(So)
Be still my heart
I want you to know
I’m coming home again
One of these days

-Verse 2-
I want you to know
I admit that I was wrong
I could never hide the truth from you

I want you to see
There’s a change inside of me
Not just words or intentions but what I do

-Chorus (2x)-

-Bridge-
What I’m trying to say
Is that I’m sorry, I’m sorry
For all of my ways

No I’m not a perfect man
But I’m learning
I’m learning to change
I’m learning from my mistakes
That is why I say

-Chorus (2x)-

-Coda (2x)-
Be still my heart
Home again
One of these days
