"Southern Jam EP Review (July 2004)"

State of Man (formerly JaD) is one of the best live bands in the Southeast…period. The energy of their shows carries into every growing audience they set foot in front of which is why they probably have the most potential of any band in Atlanta to be the next big thing. So, as a music fan, I was curious how their live vibe would translate in the studio for their latest EP, More Than Coincidence. Picking the right producer (in this case two – Rick Beato and Don Mcollister) certainly goes a long way and the result is a success. Human Condition kicks off the disc with a sonic vengeance that doesn’t stop until the last snare hit on Just Walk Away. One side step on the disc is the single worthy power ballad Bound In Chains which is destined to be the soundtrack to many a make out session for teenagers tuning into major radio markets around the country. Although a lot of the vocal melodies are similar, it creates more a sense of continuity than a detriment on the CD. Overall, it’s a solid hard rock effort with shades of R&B that will surely continue the ever-growing buzz of this popular ATL act.

I'd checked out this band's video shoot awhile back, but had never seen a full gig. After the show, I felt the same as I did going in - this band has the potential to have massive radio hits, the kind of singles that annoy you with their glossy perfection. "Swallow Your Fears"? is one such song, a giant blast of guitar rock with a Matchbox 20-ish melody and a soaring chorus. You can hear it for free on the band's MySpace page. In fact, dreadlocked singer John Stringer encouraged fans to download his band's music for free, and to buy the band's CDs and then burn them for friends.

We're featuring 'Swallow Your Fears' on our playlist. This CD is superb on many different levels and the band is a must see in concert.

State of Man
By Chris Wells -- August 20, 2006

The Atlanta based band State of Man is poised to become the next big thing. Usually, when that title is attached to any band, it can be more of a curse than a blessing but not in this instance.

The Atlanta based band State of Man is poised to become the next big thing. Usually, when that title is attached to any band, it can be more of a curse than a blessing but not in this instance. The past few years have seen State of Man open up for heavy weights acts like Kid Rock, Live, Stone Temple Pilots, No Doubt and Hoobastank, to name a few. They have been the darlings of XM radio for the past year or so with people all over America requesting their catchy as hell songs. Recently, the band’s newly released maxi single, “Swallow Your Fears” on PolyPlat Records, charted on Billboard at #22 (Issue date June 17). The have recently received word that we will be #10 in the June 24 Issue of Billboard. State of Man features insanely talented front man/song writer John Stringer, guitarist Thomas Panza, bassist James Beale and drummer Chris Love. The bands full length Cd,” Lose Your Mind” caught the ear of Atlanta based Grammy winning multi-platinum producer Don McCollister (Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins and Third Day) and platinum producer Rick Beato (Flickerstick, Vince Neil , Shinedown etc.). Both highly acclaimed producers recorded tracks for the bands last EP, “More Than Coincidence” and will also record tracks for the bands forth coming LP. State Of Man’s sound is soulful, powerful, emotional and concise. They have the classic rock appeal with songs that hit you in the heart and stay with you like a thick haze of sweet funk. This to me is a rarity in a time where there is literally a bunch of musical terds polluting the airwaves. Maybe this is one of the biggest reasons why they are taking off at hypersonic speed. Kicking ass and taking names. I will now look into my crystal ball and make a grandiose prediction. Within the next three years, State of Man will be one of the biggest bands around. Yeah, I said that sh#t.

State of Man (at Andrew's Upstairs)

When you attend a State of Man show, you aren’t just another concertgoer; instead, you are part of a family and a growing circle of friends. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first show or your hundredth. John, Thomas, James and Chris never seem to take any moment on stage for granted, and the air of appreciation and familiarity surrounding them is tangible. There truly isn’t a better time to be a fan - riding high on the success of their Billboard-charting single “Swallow Your Fears” and the anticipation of an upcoming full-length release, State of Man is poised to break into the mainstream in a big way.

In celebration of the release of the maxi-single for “Swallow Your Fears”, State of Man held an intimate performance at Andrew’s Upstairs. With a stellar opening from Three5Human, they took the stage late in the evening and immediately started off in high gear with their song “Human Condition”. The crowd’s reaction was immediate, welcoming them with open arms and applause. After a handful of songs, including “Symmetry” and their charting single, the show came to a pause as each member was presented with awards displaying their single.

It was evident the band was proud of their accomplishment, which only fueled their performance further. With edgy songs such as “Just Walk Away” and ballads like “Bound in Chains”, State of Man showed that they were capable of producing a wide spectrum of well-crafted rock. ‘Impressive’ is too weak a word to describe their performance; they didn’t miss a single beat, playing a tight set that went well after midnight.

John explained that the title of their upcoming album, Both Sides of the Story, was representative of their musical styling, as well as a philosophical belief. This was demonstrated in the finale to their set which was a medley of songs from bands such as Nirvana and Rage Against The Machine. It was the capper to a phenomenal evening of music.

Anyone who is a fan of rock, soul, alternative or just plain good music owes it to him or herself to check out State of Man. This performance only reinforced that they truly are one of Atlanta’s best rock bands, and are not to be missed. Don’t be left out of the family next time they come by.

"Both Sides of the Story" Album Review

BY KAJ ROTH

Published 08.20.06

Soulful modern rock with muscles is exactly what you get when you purchase State of Man's debut album "Both sides of the Story".

This Atlanta based band (formerly known as Jad) has an amazing groove mostly based around the excellent bassplayer James Beale and his fretless bass.
Their music reminds a bit of a mix between Ra, Alston and P.O.D's non-rap album "Payable on death" (2003), the dynamic production from Rick Beato (Flickerstick, The Working Title, Ingram Hill) leaves you fully satisfied with crunchy guitars and a fat bass.

Vocalist John Stringer puts his important touch to the band's sound with an emotional and strong voice whether you singalong to the single "Swallow your fears" or rock til you drop to "Symmetry".
The radio ready "Be still my heart" has potential of taking the band out on the radio waves while "Rise again" sounds like the perfect opener on stage.
My favorite somehow is the strong ballad "Bound in chains" that will take your mind off the everyday routines for a short while.
Oh my, another album dear to my heart!

"Swallow Your Fears," a four-song maxi-single by melodic rock quartet State of Man, generated enough sales to land on the Billboard Hot Singles sales chart for much of June. It reached as high as number 10 before dropping out of the top 25.

"We're thrilled to say the least," says State of Man vocalist John Stringer. His bandmates include guitarist Thomas Panza, bassist James Beale and drummer Chris Love.

Stringer credits the single's early success to its record company, Atlanta-based PolyPlat Records, and Decatur marketing company Face2Face M.E.G. Face2Face M.E.G. arranged a Southeast tour throughout numerous FYE record stores, most of which are located in malls such as Lenox Square in Buckhead. Stringer says the tour is a good way to reach a family audience.

"Luckily, our music is all-ages friendly, so we're able to capitalize on the mall traffic," he says of the tour. "It's a great way to get in their face, play a song acoustically for them and convince them that this is great music."

State of Man is celebrating the success of "Swallow Your Fears" with a Sat., July 1, party at Andrews Upstairs and several more FYE in-store performances. The group's full-length album, Both Sides of the Story, hits stores Aug. 1.

Bio

BIO (additional quotes & stats below):

Some would say it takes a heaping helping of hubris to think that any one person or group of people can truly make a difference. But State of Man sincerely believes that music has the power to change the world, and remain determined to do their part.

Formed in Atlanta in 2000, the members originally bonded over their common sense of professionalism and love of ‘90s rock legends. But unlike many young bands, who expect rapid success and give up when million-dollar deals don’t rain from the heavens, State of Man kept plugging away, racking up a series of accomplishments ranging from Battle of the Bands wins and Rolling Stone appearances to landing a single on the Billboard charts. “Every year something would happen to keep us going,” bassist James Beale recalls, “picking up momentum gradually along the way. We’ve experienced the highs and lows, but even when we encountered disappointment we all remained focused on our commitment to our goals. That’s why we’ve been together as long as we have, because we built that critical chemistry that is the foundation of every good band.”

That chemistry has never been more potent than on In This Place, State of Man’s first new album since 2006’s Both Sides of the Story. Produced by Rick Beato, the disc features a bevy of instantly memorable anthems ranging from the devotional “Be Still (My Heart)” (which the band dedicated to American soldiers stationed overseas), the universal love song “Bound In Chains,” and the conciliatory “I Have Forgiven” to the inspirational title track, a sign of the times and a song of hope and inspiration in the current world environment.

But perhaps no song on In This Place has proven more helpful than the arena-ready epic, “Swallow Your Fears.” Whether it’s a therapist playing the song to help teens in a suicide prevention program or Adam Bush, who produced a State Of Man video before dying of leukemia in February of 2008, the song has provided a beacon of hope for people caught up in life-or-death struggles, assuring them that “you don’t have to be alone” if you “swallow the things that hold you back from living life.”

“We’ve had the name State of Man for five years,” says guitarist/pianist Thomas Panza, “but I think this record really exemplifies what the name is about. It’s like a mission statement. We’re representative of where humanity is as a whole, and I think John’s lyrics reflect that. We want to lead by example and actually get our hands dirty.”

To that end, the band executed their ‘Service2Humanity Tour,’ in which they performed a form of community service in various cities before their concerts, inspiring local fans to join the and do the same. The concept originated in part from a 2007 tour in which they entertained troops in nine countries throughout Asia and the Caribbean, listening to soldiers’ stories and realizing the emotional impact of their music.

“Everybody in the band is in music because we want to make a difference somehow,” vocalist/guitarist John Stringer insists. “And we want to inspire other people to want to make a difference, especially in times like these. We’re in a very similar time to the era that produced artists like Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, where people are looking for change. We’re not trying to be anything we’re not: the bottom line is that we want to be true to who we are, and ultimately to inspire others to do the same.” For additional information, visit http://www.stateofmanmusic.com!
