Steer the Stars

BandRockAmericana

Haunting melodies and insightful songwriting float on ethereal synthesizers, lush vocal harmonies, steel guitar, cello, violin, accordion and banjo. Unique arrangements paint a dream-like adventure through the complacency, insanity and potential enlightenment of our western society.

Lyrics

Lost in Seas

Written By: Eric Jonasson

The Sun is still our God
night's a shadow where we hide
until the morning comes
we'll sing with spirits smoke and wine
I'm gonna love you in my darkness
I want to kiss you as you cry
we're gonna kneel before the alter
and beg forgiveness from the light

adrift we're lost in seas
of broken hearts and troubled minds
and you are here with me
at every point we intertwine
I'm gonna love you in my darkness
I want to kiss you as you cry
we're gonna kneel before the alter
and beg forgiveness from the light

Daydream Saturday

Written By: Eric Jonasson

wake, work, eat, sleep
upgrade, throw away
wake, work, eat, sleep
drive-thru, entertain
wake, work, eat, sleep
daydream saturday
wake, work, eat, sleep
save for holiday
and it's good enough for me
if it's all I'll ever be
it's good enough
if there's something more to see
I'll find it on T.V.
it's good enough,
I hope it's good enough

In Lucky Thirteen

Written By: Eric Jonasson

Deep, leagues beneath the sea
below where light bends in wrinkled retreat
we stumble on our way
brushing the fauna we never see
let in the light
show us the dream
align the stars
in lucky thirteen
sometimes I remember you
before we found out
we'd become two
do you remember me
before our dreamworld
under the sea
live in the light
wake from the dream
align our hearts
in lucky thirteen
the seeds of poets and of priests
sewn for the balance of famine and feast
will line the beds wherein will sleep
the lamb and the lion
the west and the east

Tule Funeral

Written By: Eric Jonasson

All day you talked
of things like the weather
whether it's cold or it's hot
and which you like better
I must admit
that I thought you were clever
I didn't say it before
but it's better late than never
don't give up so soon

if you were the sun
then I'd be the summer
together we'd warm every stone
and wilt every flower
May into June
we'd race through the season
still August will come
still august will come
don't give up so soon

When Last We Meet

Written By: Eric Jonasson

One day in the summer
as the sun leaves the sky
and evening's warm glow
gives in to the night
with wine in our bellies
and stars in our eyes
the crickets and cyotes
sing us goodbye
we'll rise from these bodies
with the words that we said
and fill the night sky
with our songs when we're dead

Life After Life

Written By: Eric Jonasson

Swarming through the cold dark
glowing like a firefly
orbiting a tree top
flashing in a child's eye
it's a long way from what I was
it's a long way from
what I was
Turning on and turning off
and when I'm off I sometimes
get lost
through the yard and back again
I fly
but only with the wind
swarming through the cold dark
glowing like a firefly
orbiting a tree top
flashing in a child's mind
it's a long way from what I was
it's a long way from
what I was
There is dark
but I see light
falling on everything
or is it shining out from inside
growing, exposing
I mean
it's so familiar
was it someone
or maybe something
it might be everything
still no words can describe
is this what I am
am I what this is
were we this perfect
when we were alive

No Separation

Written By: Eric Jonasson

what is on your mind
what is in your mind
I am, I am
I am
what is, I am
who is, I am
you are, you are
I am
why is everything
what is everything
you are
you are
I am

The Clock is the Maker

Written By: Eric Jonasson

The time has come
for us to start over
for living to start again
a new world to form
some become lost
some have been stolen
others do hide away
and wait for the fall
I don't mind
if you have forgotten
the place that you're coming from
is where you will go
we are the rain
pulled from the ocean
destined to fall again
and rush back to shore
born to the throne
or cast into shadows
warmth in a lover's arms
or cold and alone
distance and time
irrelevant measure
reflecting it's own design
the clock is the maker

The Distance We Keep

Written By: Eric Jonasson

In pints and tumblers
we discover
the kind of ruin
this town has to bare
fixed to our chairs
promises made today
understand the lines between
the lines between
the sisters of mercy and me
lost our way
in the whiskey and cigarettes
and wake by your side in this dream
and it's here in the distance we keep
we feel safe so we laugh
this never can happen Noelle
would you stay if I told you
that I just want to hold you
Noelle
The taverns are dreaming again
spilling drunks on the pavement
broken hearts leading lonely friends
into arms they can't have
they sing "I love you so much I can't stand it!"
the sisters of mercy and me
lost our way in the whiskey and cigarettes
and wake by your side in this dream
and it's here in the distance we keep
that our place and time meet
in some happy ending Noelle
and it's here that I told you
that I still want to hold you
Noelle

At Any End

Written By: Eric Jonasson

From the first to the final breath
it was a reckless mess
simply couldn't be avoided
keeping hope in a broken glass
as we watched the cracks
find their way into the center
this is where we stand
is it hard to jump looking at the edge
careful how you land
cause you're on your own once you're in the air
on the count of ten...
it doesn't matter
it doesn't matter
we're holding on to a sinking ship
it's time to drown or release our grip
how can you laugh when
we're at our rope's end
I'm breaking up at the thought of this
our cries for help must have all been missed
Sun was down when we made the town
and the engine sounds
were the reason for sleeping
two o'clock as the bars let out
all the drunken shouts
brought us out of our dreaming
this is where we stand
is it hard to jump looking at the edge
careful how you land
cause you're on your own once you're in the air
on the count of ten...
