Steffan & Spillane

John Spillane and Lleuwen Steffan met at a festival on the isle of Inis Mor in Ireland where they both performed at the first ever Ceilteach festival in March 2015. With passion and integrity, these two very unique voices are both recognised as leading songwriters in the Celtic musical landscape. Their songs document their homelands - the geography, people and culture.

John Spillane is a native of Cork, the County that he lovingly describes as "the centre of the universe," and it has been a huge influence on him. Two-time Meteor award winner, John is one of the most accomplished songwriters in Ireland today. His music transports the listener; his live performance captivates he audience. Vocally, he is quite unique with an almost sean nos-like element in his singing and has voice full of honesty, commitment and sensitivity. Among those who have covered his songs are Christy Moore and Sharon Shannon. 

Born and bred on the foot of Moelyci mountain in the Ogwen Valley in Wales, Lleuwen Steffan's songs are of her land and her people. Her music is heavily influenced by old Welsh hymns and folk songs. She began her music career as a jazz singer touring the USA with Chicago Rick and his Blues Band. She later developed her songwriting and spent six years in Brittany. Her latest album "Tan" won the France 3 tv Album of the Year award.

Individually and together in Welsh, Irish and English, these two remarkable songwriters twist and turn old and new folk songs, telling tales of Celtic life from two different countries and viewpoints.
