"Earmilk First listen: check out Stella's debut self-titled album before its release [Exclusive]"

It’s incredible to live in a world that ends up being so small because of technology. Music is so readily available that sometimes it can even be over-saturating and hard to find something that truly stands out. Greek artist Stella has taken her home country by storm, and I don’t think I would have discovered this gem without help from the internet. Her voice truly stands out and pulls the listener into the music, which mainly floats between mysterious, gritty rock and groovy pop.

Over the past couple of months Stella has been releasing tracks on SoundCloud, all the while turning heads and catching ears. The first single and opening track to the album is “Picking Words.” With its steady, driving bassline, thumping beat and light synth line, Stella’s voice takes on a commanding roll. Most of the instrumentation on this track and throughout the whole album is done by Stella, but this track features some help from Greek producer NTEIBINT. It's definitely one of the best sounding tracks and serves as a great opener for the rest of the album.

“Made To Attack” was the second track to be announced. Sunny guitars kick off the song which then open up into layers of groovy synths and percussion. It shows off more of her love for the 80s. Consistently running through the album is this vintage sounding element that makes you think that some of these tracks are from a different era. “Made To Attack” is one of the ones that you could totally throw in a mix with Blondie, Eurythmics, or even Siouxsie & the Banshees.

Earlier this week, EARMILK premiered Stella's track "Repeat." This track is lighter than some of the others. It's more playful and dancey, which is what I really like about the it. In the middle and again toward the end there's a point in the track that breaks into a really groovy part--you can't help but dance.

The sunny guitars and groovy disco leanings appear again on “The Map” and in a lighter spirit on “Last Minute Boy.” Tracks like “Wait On Me,” “Wet Cigarette,” and “Something Real” show a more stripped down style to Stella and break up the upbeat moments of the album. For Stella’s ethereal side, turn to “Detox” and the album’s closer “Libya.” Personally, I like the upbeat and groovy stuff the best, but the great part about Stella is that you love her voice no matter what style the music takes on.

Check out the album in its entirety here on EARMILK and look for it to be released next week on February 24th via Inner Ear Records. It’s available for pre-order now on the label’s site. - Lauren Jefferson

ΣTELLA
No one will ever accuse ΣTELLA of being ethereal. With dirt under her fingernails, a whole decade of grit in her voice (the 1980s to be exact), and an endless supply of bass licks, the Athens-based singer-songwriter will get any room moving with her hybrid disco/rock/pop. Lean inn— with tracks like “Repeat” and “Ready to Attack” you can almost feel the dance floor sweat. (Bonus tip: keep an eye open for ΣTELLA’s other project, Fever Kids — a disco duo poised to command international dance floors.) Her debut album drops February 24th. - Laura Studarus

"CMJ Track Premiere: Stella – “Made To Attack” Debut album out February 24 on Inner Ear"

In the last few years, despite the ever-declining economic situation (or maybe because of it?), Greece has come up with an excellent garage-psych scene, mostly led by Acid Baby Jesus. But needless to say, it’s the glossy, seductive Euro-dance moves that have been the country’s main export. But Stella’s sound isn’t the usual gyro restaurant background noise. She pulls back a bit on the gloss, ups the fuzzier, vintage ’80s beat and synth sounds, a simple funk guitar riff sneaks in and out, and all on top purrs the fine earworm of a lead vocal on the aptly named Made To Attack. It’s the second single off her upcoming, self-titled album, out February 24 on Inner Ear.

So far, Stella has collaborated with numerous acts (My Wet Calvin, Sillyboy, Coti K., Expert Medicine, Sad Disco) and has worked on two side projects (Fever Kids, Chest), but this is her first solo album. She plays nearly everything on it, and co-produced it with Nteibint. Check out Made To Attack below. -

"Bitchmedia Favorite New Feminist Music of March"

∑tella (pronounced Stella) is a pop star in her native Greece and just released her debut full-length album stateside last month. Her lyrics are moody and compelling on their own, but I was buying whatever she was selling as soon as I heard her blend of video game-flavored electro-pop paired with deep lady vocals. Swoon. - Katie Presley

"CLASH Premiere: Σtella - 'Way To Go' New album 'Works For You' drops on February 13th..."

Σtella is the latest project from Stella Chronopoulou, a Greek artist whose output has known many iterations.
Studying fine art in Athens, Σtella was able to mix disciplines in her free time, sculpting off kilter pop melodies out-with class.
Self-releasing her debut EP in 2012, Σtella worked with Inner Ear on her deft and highly creative 2015 debut album.
New album 'Works For You' drops on February 13th (pre-order LINK), with Clash able to share enticing art-pop gem 'Way To Go'.
A sign of where Σtella might head next, the glistening techno-fuelled production masks an under-stated pop nous.
Tune in now. - Robin Murray

"Bandcamp Exploring Greece’s Lock on the Pop and Electronic Worlds"

With her sinuous lower register and winding disco guitar lines, Σtella could very be Athens’ very own Annie Lennox—an unfuckwithable and extremely glamorous presence. (See: single and slow-burning sensuality masterclass “I’ll Never Be.”) On her sophomore release Works For You, the multi-instrumentalist continues in the same vibrant vein, her breezy pop songs saturated with simple beats, sharp hooks, and synths backing explorations of gender identity, careless make-outs, and the secret sides of love. (Bonus: She’s also a member of Fever Kids, a nu-disco duo we’d be more than happy to hear more from.) - Bandcamp Daily

"CLASH Album Stream: Σtella - 'Works For You'"

Σtella has always been creative, always wanted to express herself.
Born and raised in Greece, she initially focussed on visual arts, studying at Athens School of Fine Arts before becoming enraptured by music.
Traces of her previous discipline remains. Artful pop, Σtella fuses a sense of 60s classicism with an arch air, a sense of being removed by fully engrossed in what she's writing about.
New album 'Works For You' arrives on February 13th, and it's an enormously independent pop document that exists in its own world.
Able to celebrate introspection while still reaching outwards, 'Works For You' finds Σtella achieving a sense of balance - between pop and art, the buoyant melodies and cautious lyricism.
Check it out first on Clash, then read Σtella's introductory note below.
---
'Works For You' is my second album and it was put together in good times. I had a lot of fun making it, I knew I wanted things to sound sweet, mellow and simple, that’s what it’s all about.
The album kicks off with 'Come Collect', it’s a song I wrote almost entirely on my girlfriend’s iPad mini, you can actually hear her washing the dishes in the background as I was recording my voice! It’s a call.
Next up is 'Nest', this came out of my thoughts about the home I grew up in and all the things that bugged me whilst growing up. Some things change, but much like the “homes” we choose for ourselves as adults, sometimes they are not much different.
'Watch Me Dive' is one of my personal favourites of the album. This was when I was diving from real high to real low and that special someone was watching. 'One Toy' is all about my childhood and my new shoes! It’s me looking back and remembering just how rough kids can be, and then wondering what kind of people they are now, if they are still the same as grown-ups.
Fifth on the record is 'I’ll Never Be', a song about absence. It’s about the distance we have from things we were never close to, or never will be. Those relationships we failed to have and the experiences we'll never be a part of. That leads to 'Walk Like I Taught You', it’s me thinking ‘are we walking our own steps or somebody else’s?’ And if the answer’s yes, then just who is that guy?
On to the album’s title track, 'Works For You'. I think I wrote this while driving in my car really pissed off, thinking of someone and how things always work out her way, but then I wrote a song about it, so I guess in this case it worked out for me too!
I wrote “Way To Go” about this guy I see around in Athens sometimes. He often wears high heels and tights. He’s really pretty and tall and he dances like a motherf@#%er. Ninth up is 'Running Slow'. I remember this vividly, that summer I was dizzy all the time and had passed out quite a few times. It was a HOT summer.
Closing out the album is 'Story Telling', something that I was trying to conquer with this record and finally, the album’s closing track, “Piano Stool”. An ending about an ending, it was about a break up and what that made me. Break ups are hard.

Bio

Σtella (née Stella Chronopoulou) is a pop singer-songwriter, musician and visual artist based in Athens, Greece. Her debut self-titled album, released by Inner Ear Records (GR) in early 2015, quickly became one of the most popular Greek indie albums of the year, with songs like “Detox” and “Picking Words” enjoying extensive radioairplay. In February 2017, Inner Ear released her sophomore album, “Works for You”, already hailed by US blog Earmilk as “a sure treat!”.

Aside from her solo projects, Σtella has also frequently worked with producer NTEiBINT. Together they have released three critically-acclaimed singles on Eskimo Recordings (BE) and collaborated on the music for the athletes parade at the Opening Ceremony of the Baku 2015 European Games. The music for the entire Ceremony was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 2016. Σtella has built a strong reputation in Greece for stunning live performances, both as a headline act and supporting artist. She has opened for such international artists as Chinawoman (CA), Busy P (FR) and Breakbot (FR), and played some of Athens’ most important stages, including the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), home to the Greek National Opera. Having toured extensively around Greece – appearing at major festivals such as Ejekt, Zero, Saristra, and Up – Σtella is excited and ready to bring her live show to audiences across the world. This March she makes her US debut at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas.
