Stephanie Brickey mixes modern folk lyricism with straight-ahead pop/rock arrangements. Stephanie's diverse influences come together to “redesign” the old folk song and to keep your feet moving with stand-out pop sensibilities.

Biography

Successfully mixing modern folk lyricism with straight-ahead pop/rock arrangements and an Americana sensibility, Stephanie Brickey has come up with a distinct sound of her own. She calls on her diverse musical influences to embellish the traditional folk song and to keep the crowd moving with timeless, stand-out rock performances. Brickey has the ability to grind out a crowd-pleasing, high-octane rocker and then follow it with an irresistible lullaby so hauntingly beautiful it may leave you in tears. Brickey’s vocals complement the songs in a way that seems to accentuate the instrumental accompaniment rather than overshadow it, with a voice that’s somewhere between Margo Timmins and Linda Thompson.

Brickey has been highly visible on the St. Louis music scene for some time performing as solo artist, as a member of SLIM (along with Lynn Reif and Mary Alice Wood) and as the frontperson for A Room Away.

Stephanie Brickey’s sound is infectious and unique. Her songs are timeless, smart and alluring.

Nightsounds

Written By: Stephanie Brickey

Crickets chirpin’, leaves a rustlin’, swings a swayin’, mama’s prayin’, daddy’s sleepin’, sisters fakin’, I’m just listen to the night sounds. Window creakin’, faucets leakin’, locust singin’, lightbugs blinkin’, cattle moanin’ and the stars are shinin’, I’m just listen to the night sounds. Porch light hummin’, junebugs buzzin’, full moons risin’, floating high above it all. And somewhere out there, there’s someone whistlin’, but I’m just listen to the night sounds. T.V. snowin’, baby wakin’, mama’s singin’ away those worries weighin’. Grandma’s knowin’ that the good Lord’s watchin’ and I’m just listening to the night sounds.

Valley Moon

Written By: Stephanie Brickey

In the year when the autumn leaves are falling and the timothy a yellow hue, I’ll be here in the valley where you left me with a broken heart, thinking of you. In the spring when the jenny wrens are calling and the breezes blow a warmer tune, I’ll be here in the valley where you left me, aspirations high as the valley moon. A younger man sees his whole life in his hands and I’ve taken all time will allow. Never wanted for, never needed anything then, but I need you now. And when fall turns to winter I’ll be waiting amid barren skies and breezes cold. Here in the valley where you left me with a heart that dies, but never grows old. Everyday a little memory fades and the stars await their final bow. Never wanted for, never needed anything then, but I need you now. Winter dreams will awake me in the morning with a promise that you’ll be home soon. Here in the valley where you left me, aspirations high as the valley moon.

Hooverville

Written By: Stephanie Brickey

Nobody sees us in the middle of the day and I guess a lot of people would like to keep it that way. But it doesn't make the problem disappear or go away. It’s gonna be a long dark night out here alone. Tune into the news on my new Philco radio. Found it in a dumpster not too long ago. Said another 250 more got nowhere else to go. It’s gonna be a long dark night, but we won’t give up the fight. Down in Hooverville, for the lost and never found. Down in Hooverville, been sleepin’ on the ground. In Hooverville, where hope is never found in the long dark nights out here alone. Livin’ in boxes and singin’ for dimes and I wonder, I wonder why. Longer the days grow and darker the sky and I wonder, I wonder why. Sent out a letter to the president. It said, “while you where kissin’ babies we were buildin’ tents.” So this is where we’re stayin’ because we can’t afford a rent. It’s gonna be a long dark night, but we won’t give up the fight.
