Bio

A work which grew from a one-off concert of poetry mixed into regular guitar repertoire and free improvisation during a stay in
Brighton England by a visiting West Coast poet.
We stood back and said ‘That was good – but what if…?’ and ‘Galactic Symphonies’ developed from that close rapport
- a unique multi-media programme, music written by Richard Durrant with Stephen John Kalinich's poetry, with film and live projections.
It melds those elements into a performance that evades being placed in any obvious box.
It’s soft and quiet, it’s brash and loud, it’s inspiring, it’s never dull!
‘Galactic Symphonies’ is designed to scale up or down according to its surroundings – the more unusual the performing space the better!
‘Galactic Symphonies’ was filmed during live performances and is released as a double-sided studio recording + live surroundsound DVD.
We stood back again and collectively went ‘Wow, that works!’
We put it on as part of Brighton Festival Fringe – a lot of other people stood and went ‘Wow, that works!’

British guitarist Richard Durrant studied at the Royal College of Music and has forged an eclectic, uncategorisable career that encompasses
classical concerts and recitals, numerous forays into electric folk-tinged bands, jazz, electronica and symphony orchestra collaborations, advertising music,
BBC ident jingles and children’s TV programmes,
playing The Royal Albert Hall and a tent on the beach in one short week.
He was delighted to get the job replacing John Williams in ‘supergroup’ Sky (Richard still performs with legendary bass player Herbie Flowers).
Richard also works solidly composing, recording and producing his own solo work and acts for his own LongMan label.

Los Angeles poet and lyricist Stephen John Kalinich is, well, ‘different’.
He was signed to The Beach Boys’ Brother label and wrote numerous songs that appear on albums by The Beach Boys and their solo work.
SJK was a staff writer for Motown; contributed songs to his friend the ‘legendary’ P.F. Sloan’s recent album.
His profile has been raised considerably by
- writing the only duet recorded by Brian Wilson and Sir Paul McCartney
- recent re-releases of his work with Dennis Wilson on his acclaimed solo album 'Pacific Ocean Blue'
- a ‘lost’ album of his poems produced by his good friend Brian Wilson, with whom he continues to write.
SJK has an extensive output of poetry – by no means all published.
His long work 'If You Knew' was presented at Children Uniting Nations conference in Washington DC in 2008, before assorted politicians, heads of state...
...and Goldie Hawn kissed him!
He is enjoying reaching live audiences with work that shifts beyond the 'Beach boys' lyricist label.
Stephen John Kalinich received 2 nominations for Latest Awards for his work during Brighton Festival 2008, including Best Male Performer.

Malcolm Buchanan-Dick is a sculptor, an artist who uses computers and multimedia to control sculptural installation.
Never taking an obvious route, Malcolm has trodden a variety of strange paths in his numerous installations and projects, including several awards.
He has developed interactive devices that enable disabled artists access via switches to video technology.
His VJ Harmonium allows him to project and manipulate light from a console built into an old harmonium chassis.
Malcolm B-D brings an eccentric eye to ‘Galactic Symphonies'.
