Bio

I am a 16 year old guitarist who lives in Armidale, NSW, Australia. I started learning guitar at the age of 5 and studied classical technique for 10 years. In the past few years I have started listening to guitarists such as Eric Roche and John Butler and became inspired by the world of acoustic fingerstyle guitar. I began to learn pieces written for this style and became particularly fascinated by percussive fingerstyle.

My influences are: John Butler, Thomas Leeb, Eric Roche, Andy Mckee, Don Ross, Antione Dufour, Craig D’Andrea, Preston Reed, Leo Kottke, Tommy Emmanuel, Lindsay Buckland (Dulcimer), Justin King, Michael Hedges, Newton Faulkner and some influences from U2.

This year I got serious about performing. I have done regular gigs at The Armidale Club. After doing a gig at Tamworth I was approached by Lag guitars and offered an endorsement. I then had the opportunity to do two gigs during the ‘Hats off to Country’ weekend in July in Tamworth, NSW, Australia. And while my style is not country, I received tremendous positive feedback on my unique style of playing. I have recently performed a 2 hour benefit concert for the Armidale Branch of the RSPCA which was very well received by the audience.

I am now focusing on writing and performing my own material and loving every minute of it. I’m passionate about performing and I am finding that my pieces are becoming very popular among audiences.

There are more details about me on my website at www.stephenohern.com from which there are links to my YouTube channel. I would also be happy to come and meet with you and undertake an audition however I will be in Canada from mid November until mid January. While in Canada I am going to record my first CD with Absurd Machine Productions in Winnipeg. Enclosed with this application are some recordings of my own material as well as some material from a few other guitarists.

Update: I have now completed recording my CD and it will be produced by the end of Jan 2010. The CD has 12 originals which can be best described as contemporary fingerstyle folk. I have uploaded a video of one song "Distance" to my Youtube channel as an example. www.youtube.com/stephenohern
