"Love in Action"

Stereochemistry is headed to South Africa among the winners of a battle of the bands fundraiser held at Grape Street in Philadelphia, PA. The non-profit organization CIFKids (Catherine's Inspiration for Kids) held the battle of the bands to chose a few select bands to play in Cape Town, South Africa during the African March of Millions (Oct, 2007). This event is being organized to fight the child rape crisis in South Africa.

"Stereochemistry ready to rock Nyack's Bourbon Street"

From stages seemingly too small for a four-piece-band with a 6'5" lead vocalist-guitarist comes a sound dripping with the influence of musical genres as varied as rock, funk, jazz and punk.

For the members of Stereochemistry, gaining respect from the fans of Pearl Jam and Primus is just as important as gaining respect from the socially aware followers of The Beastie Boys and U2.

Formed by frontman Ryan Townsend and guitarist Chris Di Maulo from the ashes of National Steel, Stereochemistry has spent the better part of a year writing material, playing shows across the East Coast, and trying to figure out from where exactly they hail.

"We're based in Philly, live in New Jersey, and 75 percent of the shows we play are in New York City," says 24-year-old Townsend, a New City native who calls Sayreville, N.J. home.

He's hoping a hometown crowd turns out for their show tomorrow at Bourbon Street in Nyack.

The band has grown from playing frat houses and bars near the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia — where Di Maulo attends school with bassist Chris Teijelo and drummer Ryan Marek — to playing clubs such as CBGBs, a home to punks like the Ramones and Blondie and The Continental, where Guns 'N' Roses first made their New York City debut.

The band plans on making their international debut in Cape Town, South Africa when they play the Love in Action Concert, a musical event planned by Catherine's Inspiration for Kids (CIFKIDS) and scheduled for October, 2007.

The concert is part of the African March of Millions, designed to challenge the child-rape crisis in Africa. With AIDS at epidemic levels in parts of the continent, rape has become widespread because of a belief that having intercourse with a virgin will protect against the HIV. As a result, many girls under the age of eight are being victimized.

"The idea seems so outlandish," says Teijelo. "It seems like a wrong that's easy to right just by spreading awareness."

As one of four bands to be selected by CIFKIDS following the Grape Street Battle of the Bands in Philadelphia in March, Stereochemistry will join four European bands and other African acts.

"Our music doesn't give anyone a reason not to like it," says Marek. "Any kind of music that you like, we probably touch on it at least a little bit."

The band's strengths revolve around the tight drumming of Marek, the melodic baselines of Teijelo and guitar riffs from Townsend and Di Maulo.

At their instrumental best during originals like "Flyswatter," Townsend's vocals take the sound to another level.

"We want people to notice the blends, styles, and players and expand their view of a genre," says Teijelo.

"Music is something that's a universal language and it's something that everyone can understand," says Townsend. "It's a good way to bring people together; it's just cool to be able to play music and start to connect."

Bio

Stereochemistry is an original rock/jazz/blues/fusion/funk project that holds no boundaries or limitations on their musical horizons. The band was launched in Philadelphia, PA in 2005, however, with members located in Northern and Central New Jersey, as well as, Pennsylvania they perform live throughout Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York City.

The bands conception arose from the ashes of Indie Rock band, “National Steel”, where drummer, Chris Di Maulo and guitarist, Ryan Townsend first forged a musical rapport. After playing extensively, throughout New Jersey, and New York City, at Village staples such as The Red Lion, “National Steel” ran out of steam and Di Maulo and Townsend quickly turned back to their musical roots to begin a fresh project.

With Townsend on lead vocals and guitar and Di Maulo splitting his time between the guitar and drums it wasn’t long before prodigious bass player, Chris Teijelo was called upon to bear the responsibility of this rhythmic staple.
Shortly after, Ryan Marek solidified the line-up with his punk-roots and original sound on both guitar and drums, which has allowed him and Di Maulo to share the duty of both guitarist and drummer.

Because of the musical diversity of its members styles and influences Stereochemistry has developed a fusion and synergy amongst its music that yields an intense audible and visual experience.
