"YSB Official Review - Sterling EQ"

If you thought that classical music could not be sexy or fun then you have never seen Sterling EQ play. I had my expectations exceeded in a very pleasant way by this group. These four lovely ladies will take you on a journey that is captivating and entertaining.

The journey that one is taken on from start to finish is breathtaking and enjoyable. The Group has got loads of talent for their individual instruments and clearly love playing the music styled for them. The ladies are a must see if you enjoy music. It doesn’t matter what your personal preference is, they cover it all from classical to Kwaito.

As a live act they are captivating and do everything to draw you into their songs. The simple introductions for each song or section of the performance are slick and well executed. It was the true expression of the saying “time flies when you are having fun” as the show seemed to finish “quickly” yet when I looked at the time we had been entertained for just over an hour.

If you ever see any promotional material for Sterling EQ and have never seen their show, do yourself a favour and book tickets – you will not be disappointed.

"Four Hot Chicks With Strings"

Sterling's debut album launch, 'Nova' took place last rainy Friday at the o-so trendy Wembley Square. You've never heard of Sterling? Neither had I, but I had to check out four hot chicks with strings playing in the rain!

Okay they weren’t exactly playing in the rain; the all girl group played their string instruments in the very sheltered Wembley Square. Sterling did put a new twist on my idea of an all girl group. Yes one was blonde, one had red hair, one had long legs to-die-for and the other had the most perfect hair. But none of them were ditsy or dancing half naked on the stage with no musical talent.

On the contrary, all four members are top qualified and award-winning instrumentalists. The appeared on stage beautifully put together and polished in specially designed cocktail dresses, each dress seemed unique to their personal taste. Then they burst into a spectacularly lively and energetic performance. This was definetly no classical musical snooze-fest!

The Sterling album launch drew quiet the crowd, no one seemed to mind the soggy weather outside. There were those who had reserved their tables at the various restaurants, those who had come early to grab a seat… the young, the old and the toddlers in the front row. It was a fantastic turn out of people, which brought a buzz of excitement to the square. And Sterling fed the crowd exactly what they had come for! The ladies played with passion and enthusiasm! All four with strong stage presence had the audience captivated.

The venue completely complimented Sterling’s performance. With a high ceiling and space that let the sound travel. This venue was just the right balance between classical sophistication and dynamic Friday night entertainment. The venue choice was much better than any pretentious night club, surely more accommodating to Sterling’s broad audience. Our photographer said it reminded her of a concert at Rockefeller Centre.

The ‘Nova’ album comprises of various energetic pieces of music. Some tracks are Sterling’s take on existing pieces, such as Beethoven’s Symphony no. 5. While others pieces are original compositions by Gabi Le Roux, who produced the album. Yay! We love original music!

The night was a great success for Sterling’s debut launch, and for those of us discovering a new gem on the South African music scene. I felt that it was awesome that their album launch was free. If you want people to hear your music, and attract new listeners, then have a FREE launch in a convenient location! It was such a fantastic way to be introduced to Sterling’s fusion musical style.
