Bio
To the people who dont know me yet: Im Steven Verbeek, born on the 20th of July 1981 in Alphen a/d Rijn, The Netherlands. I grew up in a warm, loving family with a mother, a father and one younger brother.
Music has always been my passion, from a very early age. My father Willem Verbeek made music all his life, and taught me my first guitar chords when I was old enough to hold a guitar. Soon I played and sang songs with my guitar. During high school I took some piano lessons and additional guitar lessons at the local music school, and I played in several bands during that period.
In 2005 I began writing my own songs and lyrics, and because I went through a lot at that time, I created many songs during 2005. Expressing my feelings in my own songs was a great way for me to deal with them. This thought is also the theme of the title song of my first album Make Your Song. Every song I write has a story behind it. For example: The song Untainable tells the story of an apparently impossible love with a girl from a different culture and background, the song Turn Back To You deals with subjects as prejudice, gossip and discrimination, and the song As Good As New is built around the feeling of powerlessness. I wrote this last song when I went through a difficult period of time in my life; my father was diagnosed with cancer, and we heard that he had only a few months to live. Writing this song was very special for me, especially because my father had a chance to hear the song before he died. This period of time has given me much strength and energy to continue with my own music.
All the fun I have when Im writing, recording and performing my music, together with all the thoughts and feelings that I experienced (which I express in my songs) All of that comes together in my first CD, entitled Make Your Song. A wonderful project which I built up from scratch, with a lot of help from many people. A project which Im very proud of. Furthermore, I hope that a lot of people enjoy the songs: the lyrics, the feelings and the music itself.
