"Review of Steve Bevis, Live @ The Journey Cafe, Katoomba"

He effortlessly switches from pop/folk influenced strumming to blues/country/world influenced finger-picking styles. The songs drift back and forth between political/social settings (tales of refugees and the less fortunate) without bashing you over the head with the message; and
personal tales (friendship, love and relationships) without the usual soppy and twee emotional cliches.

Bevis's talent as a songwriter and performer is proven by his constant strike-rate in selling CD's at gigs - this night being no exception. An artist who inspires enough confidence in gig-goers to buy their CD on the way out of the gig so often, is definitely an artist to watch out for. - Mountains of Sound

Bio

Whether gently warming a room on his own with his soulful, bluesy, acoustic roots music, or really raising the temperature with his cohorts in “Steve Bevis & The HoBo Whoevers”, singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer Steve Bevis, puts passion, intrigue and intelligence into his music in equal measure. Drawing on the OZ rock influences of Died Pretty, Hunters & Collectors, The Saints, Spy Vs Spy, Neil Murray, Paul Kelly and Midnight Oil; while wearing the dark shades of Nick Cave - and standing in the light of the Finn Brothers, the end result can be heard on his forthcoming CD's: "Telecast Hotel", a blazing roots rocker, and the more subtle and winding "Tropic Of Conversation", an adventurous singer/songwriter CD that takes no lyrical prisoners.

In tandem with the music, the lyrics that embody these songs are clearly influenced by contemporary global situations. Asylum seekers, refugees, corruption, war, injustice and the environment. "They include a bunch of things that I felt just had to be said," says Steve. "Because real people and events lie at the heart of these songs." And that's the kind of stuff that you can't hide, or just stick on. You can hear it with every listen". You can hear it in the distant ringing sounds, in the echoes of rolling rhythms, and in voices following a melody... I'm listening for a place that’s fun - and healing. That’s what I’m after.”

Steve’s previous CD’s include the sprawling and eclectic double album, Put Out The Sun Hold Up The Sky. Steve wrote, recorded and performed this album himself, with some occasional help from Rob Grosser (Tim Gaze, Jimmy Barnes) and Liz Frencham (Jigzag) on the rhythm section. Heard internet zine called it “a great double album.” While OzMusic described the songwriting as a place where, “with a bare bones honesty, gives the listener a blanket of personal experiences”.

Steve Bevis & The Bright Side is a 9 track ep, featuring the stand out rock tracks, “Carry Me”. Great production and enthusiastic performances capture an act hitting its stride. A radio edit is also available. Though this ep still sounds fresh, the new band (with new name) is currently promoting the new album 'Telecast Hotel', a potentially breakthrough roots and rock effort.

Drummer Steve Hibbins, whose previous bands include Guns of Fire and Allergic Reaction, is no stranger to the pounding of the skins. Steve learned drums from the age of 7, and his expertise behind the kit, solid rhythm and songwriting ability all of his own, provides a midas touch. Richard Anderson on Bass, has lent his talent to bands such as Swirl and Front End Loader. He is currently also playing with Genevieve Maynard. Richard is a pleasure to watch perform. His ease on stage and presence as an effervescent rocker is evident. Richard has also written and performs his own material, and so as a trio, bring a significant amount of talent and experience to the table.

Steve Bevis & The HoBo Whoevers, with new album 'Telecast Hotel' underarm, are on track for an exciting period of touring and promotional activities.
