Bio

Steve Gray was born in 1959 in London, England, and began playing the saxophone professionally in the early 1980s. After gaining experience throughout high school, he studied music at Metro State college, and began collaborating with Karen Davis, Bob Rebholtz (of the contemporary jazz group Images), and Laura Newman (in AOA), all local jazz favorites.

Steve has performed with world-renowned jazz greats Joe Bonner and Joe Keel, and eventually founded “Steve Gray’s Power Play,” a New York contemporary jazz group consisting of keyboards, guitar, drums, bass, and of course, a saxophone.

Steve toured throughout the United States and Europe as a backup musician and regular horn section member with such heavyweights as Elton John, Al Jarreau, Rod Stewart, Anita Baker, Sade, George Clinton and Parliament, Ronnie Laws, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. As a regular horn section member of Earth, Wind, and Fire, he performed on the group’s three major tours of North America and Asia. Steve has also recently collaborated with noted producer Derek Edmonson on his latest album Shades of Gray. Edmonson has worked with and produced such artists as Marco Antonio Solis, Rahsaan Patterson, Michelle Williams, LaTina Webb, Eric Benet, Keith Crouch, Ricky Jones, Sy Smith, DeBora Simmons-Edmonson, Rodney Jerkins, Ty and Cory, and Halifax.

Steve has gained a large fan base after performing at such notable events as the Taste of Colorado, the Black Arts Festival, WGRV The Groove Show in Melbourne, FL, Freeman Stage Jazz Festival in Fenwick Island, DE, Jazztrax Catalina Jazz Festival in Catalina Island, CA, and the Richmond International Jazz Festival in Richmond, VA, gaining rave reviews at every stop.

Steve is now signed with Sonic Wave International and has recently released his first album, Shades of Gray. The CD features many special guests, including Pocket (from the TV show “BET Live” with the house band Who in the Hell Left the Gate Open on lead guitar). His music is being played on major smooth jazz radio stations throughout the United States and abroad. With thousands of live performances spanning over three decades and one of the largest and most loyal fan bases in contemporary urban jazz, funk, and R&B, this critically acclaimed veteran artist is quickly being recognized as a growing force in the world of smooth and contemporary jazz for years to come.
