Written by Mike Ryan
Friday, 06 July 2007

About the artist:

The 20-year-old singer/songwriter started playing guitar in December 2003. A senior at SUNY Oneonta, Kissinger is studying business and economics and hopes to graduate this winter.

Artists including John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jason Mraz, Eric Clapton and Jack Johnson have influenced his acoustic pop/rock. Kissinger has received comparisons to Mayer.

Although he’s a resident of Broadalbin, Kissinger frequently performs in Saratoga Springs, Ballston Spa and Gloversville. Almost every Wednesday he participates in the open mic night held at Jitters Café.

Kissinger just began performing in front of people this year, and tries to play two to three open mics a week. His sets consist of original material as well as covers such as “No Such Thing” by Mayer, “Curbside Prophet” by Mraz and “Rodeo Clowns” by Johnson.

Last month Kissinger put out “The Blodget EP.” The release contains seven original tunes and one cover song, “Clockwatching” by Mraz.

Steve Kissinger is playing an all ages show at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at Fulton Book Co. in Gloversville. Admission is free.

Quotable Quotes:

“I love the way music lets you express yourself and your feelings. If my music touches someone, that’s all I’m really looking for,” Kissinger said.

Bio

My music comes from a very personal space. At the same time, I feel like its a space that everyone can relate to in one way or another. I like to take away from my own experiences as well as act as a narrator to tell the stories that I've seen in my life. I try to keep a certain depth to most songs and I think it keeps things interesting for anyone listening. Key influences include John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Eric Clapton, and Keith Urban. Lots of genres of music play a part in my creative process. When you're listening to my EP "The Farthest Thing," you are hearing a lot of music and talent squeezed into only a few sessions in the studio. While I finished up college at Oneonta State University, in central New York, I had the opportunity to record some of my acoustic songs. My good friend Ben Hemingway (drummer for "The Cast Before The Break"), who was producing and recording my EP, lent his talents and played bass, drums, and sang backup vocals, effectively transforming my songs into what they are now. When I close my eyes and listen to my album I hear a more complex sound and hope to one day achieve that, both live and in the studio. I'm constantly writing and expressing myself through music and hope that I never have to stop. Enjoy!
