Steve Lewis & the Vagrants

New York City, New York, USA
BandRockFunk

Steve Lewis creates a unique musical world of mischief, overseeing his group the Vagrants on a journey through a lyrical landscape of tricksters, bad girls, and guerrilla rebels, with a backdrop of dirty dirty rock. The music is like an evening cruise on a steam powered hovercraft.

Biography

Steve began in music at a young age, transcribing birdsong onto an old Lowrey organ. Not wanting to be pigeonholed, he broke off to form Downright, a popular funk and dance band which created a following in the Southeast during the early '00's.

Upon moving to the northeast Steve worked with a number of wonderful musicians, including work with song maven Jaymay (Bluenote) and a stint producing the Americana collective King Wilkie (Rounder/Casa Nueva). While straddling the rock, funk, and folk worlds, Steve's many influences converge in a way that is unique and bold, with dashes of T. Rex, Pixies, and Tom Waits.

Steve now presents his record Shaky Floors, produced by the impresario Bill Emmons (Sonic Youth, Jon Spencer, Peter Bjorn & John), recorded at Sonic Youth's own Think Tank in Hoboken,

Lectric Chair

Written By: Steve Lewis

I could be wrong but I'm probably not
bout this feelin' this feelin' I got
I did my homework, combed my hair
I sat me down in the 'lectric chair

Strap me down in the 'lectric chair
tell me your troubles while I fix your hair
here come the juice and it feels so good
I get so excited like I knew I would

I did the laundry I watched the news
I put a shine on both of my shoes
I hear you honkin' back there for awhile
running over people just ain't my style

Strap me down in the 'lectric chair
tell me your troubles while I fix your hair
here come the juice and it feels so good
I get so excited like I knew I would

'Lectric chair, 'lectric chair, 'lectric

Take a dive in the 'lectric chair
tell me your troubles while I fix your hair
here come the juice and it feels so good
I get so excited like I knew I would

Take a trip in the 'lectric chair
tell me your troubles while I fix your hair
here come the juice and it feels so good
I get so excited like I knew I would

Backbiters

Written By: Steve Lewis

All them cruel backbiters want to do you harm
All them big-city backbiters sure want to do you harm
Don't it make you wish sometimes you could go back home to the farm

Well a long dark stranger asked me to pick up his load
well a long dark stranger asked me to carry his load
he said meet me on the corner of Jug Factory Road

If I had a hundred dollars I could rest for awhile
if I had me a hundred dollars - sit down and rest for awhile
if I had me a pony I could get in the saddle and ride

I was carrying the package to the top of the lonesome hill
I was carrying the package to the top of the lonesome hill
But when I got up to the top well there was that sheriff McGill
and he's a bad man!

Oh the police arrested me - tied me to a tree
oh the police arrested me - tied me to a tree
I'll give you anything you want just please don't sick them dogs on me

Just a little time to serve out on the farm
just a little time for me to serve out on the farm
all them cruel backbiters sure want to do you harm

Don't that sun look good settin' down over the trees
don't the evening sun look good settin' down o'er the trees?
I'm gonna run to my baby the minute I gets free.
