Pianist Steve Myerson brings his eclectic repertoire to Chris’ this weekend, mashing up Gino Vanelli with Irving Berlin, Carly Simon with Stevie Wonder and original material. A dedicated jazz musician under the tutelage of Bill Charlap and James Williams, Myerson (whose sibling Jamie is a renowned techno artist) nonetheless refuses to follow standard old-school traditions. His quartet (alto saxophone, upright bass, drums) mixes eighth-note funk-fusion with straight-ahead and prestandards-era American Songbook classics with contemporary pop. Steve Myerson's piano playing was just terrific. I flipped at a point where he did a short improv of parallel octaves on “Blackbird,” a difficult maneuver at the least.

Steve Myerson has recorded as a sideman for many projects. Notably he recorded and arranged music for the Danny Aiello/Jane Curtin film "Brooklyn Lobster". Steve Myerson started playing piano at the age of 9. He won awards in high school and in college. Through studies with educator, pianist, and organist Trudy Pitts, Steve attained the skills and opportunities needed to realize his potential in a challenging music environment.
While in college, Steve performed with many great artists, including trumpeter John Swana, and drummer Adam Nussbaum. Steve was hired to play with the late Grover Washington Jr., and ended up one of the last pianists ever to work with this legend. Steve also continued to pursue private lessons with Blue Note artist Bill Charlap and also with Steeplechase artist Andy Laverne.
After college, Steve landed the keyboard spot for the Grammy-Award nominated Stylistics. He went on to tour with them for over a year, as well as other acts included in the soul jam presentation like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, the Dramatics, the Chi-Lites, and others. Steve made his television debut performing with the Stylistics for the United Negro College Fund on NBC. Recently, Steve was selected as music director for the Sonny Grosso/Phil Ramone production "Be My Love", a play with music about legendary tenor Mario Lanza. Steve worked with famed Billy Joel producer Phil Ramone on the music, and coached vocals for the entire cast. Steve also played a small part as "Sal", Lanza's accompanist. In 2006, Steve sat at the piano with singer Gianni Russo (Carlo Rizzi of "The Godfather") for a six-month weekly engagement at the legendary Rainbow Room.
Steve earned his Master's Degree in Jazz studies from William Paterson University under the guidance of Harold Mabern and James Williams. He continues to teach, music direct, conduct, compose, arrange, and play piano for various ensembles.
