Bio

An acclaimed actor, renowned playwright, and a national poetry slam grand champion, Steve’s work has been hailed by critics as “Brilliant”, “Powerful Theatre” and “Hilarious”.

As a poet, he is the winner of numerous national and regional slam championships, including the 2002 Hollywood Championship, and the 2003 LA Championship, as well as winning the 2003 National Championship as the captain of team LA. His work has been featured on a wide variety of media outlets, including ABC World News, Good Morning America, MSNBC’s Hardball, HBO’s Def Poetry(twice), Showtime’s Crossover, MTV’s World AIDS Festival, BET’s Lyric Café, Artisan Films’ Belly DVD, Oprah Winfrey’s celebration of Maya Angelou’s 75th birthday, P-Diddy’s Annual White Party, and Quincy Jones’ Lifetime Achievement Award celebration. He also served as poet and creative director for two national spoken word tours - The Underground Poets Railroad and Norman Lear’s Declare Yourself voter registration initiative, which registered over a million voters. He recently performed at private events for Senator Hilary Clinton (special request of Quincy Jones), and Senator Barack Obama,(special request of Oprah Winfrey). His album, The Intimate Nature Of Knife Fights, continues to win him a wider audience, in addition to critical praise, and he is hard at work on his yet-to-be-named follow up.

Over the last few years, he has garnered much acclaim for both his solo work and the work he has created with Sekou (tha Misfit). He and Sekou were invited by HBO to perform their play, no easy choice, at the 12th Annual U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, CO. They were commissioned by the American Civil Liberties Union to create a new performance piece that they unveiled at the annual ACLU Membership Conference and followed that with Unabridged, a series of recorded and filmed poems that can be seen on the ACLU website. Their newest play, The Word Begins, (dir. Robert Egan) was developed at the prestigious Ojai Playwrights Conference to universal praise and just completed its’ first national run in 2007 at the illustrious Signature Theater in DC where it was hailed as “explosively funny”, and “…a stunning show on the cutting edge of modern theater.” His hit one man show, 40 Days, received rave reviews from the LA Weekly (Pick of the Week) and Backstage West (Critic’s Pick) to name a few and was declared Best Solo Performance of 2005 by Entertainment Today. It has been added to theatre curriculum for University courses and will be remounted later this year in rep with his new solo show, Stand UP. In addition, a collection of his one acts, Jumping the Median, will be produced by Norman Lear for a theatrical run in 2008.
