Steven Zunker & The Vaticans

"Culling musical stylings from a variety of traditions including bluegrass, rock, and alt-country, Steven Zunker's debut album is a surprisingly cohesive amalgamation of genres. Guitars crunch, twang and creep against a backdrop of strings and wheezing organ lines. Zunker plays all the instruments through twelve songs that are sometimes hushed, sometimes rowdy, but always melodic. It's southern rock for a Gothic cathedral, high-church Americana, the soundtrack for a Flannery O'Conner short story."

"His intriguingly atmospheric compositions seem like Gothic audio scenes. Currently the most unusual and "self willed" album I've had the opportunity to review in the last year. For anyone who likes the unpredictable and unusual, it's a must."

Zunker, a twenty seven year old from Lexington, Ky, is currently wrapping up his newest solo project with Nashville producer Pat Holt. Holt, a long time friend and producer of Johnny Cash, has compared Zunker’s songs to “early Cash.” Hints of Ryan Adams, Bonnie Prince Billy, and David Eugene
Edwards are also heard throughout Zunker’s music. Zunker is now playing and touring with The Vaticans, a group in which he has been friends with for years. Accompanying Zunker to Nashville , The Vaticans are also featured on three songs on the upcoming album.
