"Stillicide"

Formed in the spring of 2002, Stillicide is a band out of New Brunswick, New Jersey, that is made up of five friends: vocalist Clint Davis, guitarist and background vocalist Chris Lee, guitarist and background vocalist Eric Schraedley, bassist and keyboardist Nat Werschulz and drummer Rob Vazquez, who each share a love for all kinds of music. The diverse spectrums of sound that have influenced the band include jazz, ska, reggae, pop, rock, metal, blues and alternative. That admiration of sorts has come together to become the sound that Stillicide calls their own and what can only be described as “groove rock with a funk fetish.”
Armed with what has been called the Stillieffect, which is the band’s superhuman ability to draw their audience’s in through their music, a Stillicide live performance promises not to disappoint and is packed with great musicianship, plenty of energy, artistic personality and a funky style.
A Stillicide is defined as a continual falling or succession of drops of rain water falling from the eaves. However, according to the five Jersey boys, it’s an upheaval of the status quo in music. The band has been keeping a tight Philly presence since this past January and are also currently jamming through New York all the while working on creating and fine tuning new recordings. "Stillicide Rocks Out at Rider-The band Stillicide is sticking together for the long run."

On Friday, Sept. 12, the Bart Luedeke Center Pub was filled with great food, great people, and great entertainment. Rider students of all ages came out to see Stillicide’s performance, and the crowd erupted in cheers of excitement at its conclusion.
Two members of the electrifying new band are none other than Rider’s own Chris Lee and Pat Barrar. With Lee’s awesome guitar playing and Barrar on lead vocals, they’re sure to prove Rider proud in years to come.
Stillicide also consists of guitar player Eric Schraedley, vocalist Clint Davis, bassist Nat Werschulz and drummer Rob Vazquez.
The band was formed in March 2002. Their great talent was evident, but something seemed to be missing from their sound.
After the addition of two new members, the band “clicked” and everything fell into place, according to Lee. Since then they have played numerous performances, averaging about one show a month.
Lee said the addition of their new drummer, Vazquez, brought about a “great chemistry.” The drummer brought a new, innovative sound to the band, pushing them far beyond their potential.
First time listeners had only good comments about the band. “Stillicide mixes a mind-blowing guitar duo with the remarkable instrumental sounds of bass and percussion and adds a set of vocals for an extremely awe-inspiring, rockin’ resonance,” said freshman Andrew Tinkler.
“The band’s energy and talent was extreme! They put on a good show,” said supporter Danielle Servilio.
A small production company known as In the Hole has also noticed the upcoming band’s intensity and potential. They are currently working with Stillicide to help the band produce their first full-length CD. According to Lee, the company does not want to sign the band in order to avoid tying it down to a small company. They believe Stillicide has what it takes to make it to the big leagues.
The band has been influenced by many older styles of music. Stillicide does not owe its success to the inspiration of one type of music, but instead to many different styles. Led Zepplin and other forms of classical rock have had a big influence on members of the band, according to Lee.
For more information check out the band’s website at www.stillicide.com. “Go to our website and sign our guest book,” Lee suggested.
Lee said that hopefully in about five years the band will be living together somewhere outside of New Jersey; spending time working on its music. He would like to see them somewhere such as Chicago or California, where the band’s music can be heard.
“I couldn’t see myself playing with anyone else,“ said Lee. “I wouldn’t want to.”

"Stillicide"

Funk’s not dead. And while Stillicide may have, um, killed the still, they’re definitely keeping the funky beats alive. The Jersey-based band was inspired by a three-month trip to Hawaii, where the guys added some reggae to their sound (originally heavy progressive rock). And while they don’t really like the idea of putting a label on their sound, the closest approximation would be something like “jam-metal-alternative-rock.” That’s a little vague, but you’ll just have to check them out live to get a better idea of what they’re about.

Stillicide has been making music for five years now, but not with all the same band members. Currently, the band’s lineup is: singer Clint Davis, guitarists Chris Lee and Eric “Ster” Schraedley, bassist and keyboardist Nat Werschulz, and drummer Rob Vazquez.

“We don’t sound like anyone,” says Lee. “We don’t play like anyone. And we’re determined to rip the music scene apart. Our shows aren’t just shows. We are an experience, which we intend to add to. We don’t just play our songs. We go nuts on stage.”

To date, Stillicide has released four demos and one full-length album, but they’re planning to release a four-song EP of their new stuff sometime in summer ’07. The guys have only been playing in Philly for about nine months, but they already have a large fan base in the area.

“Above all, we’re just here to have fun and write sick music,” says Lee. “Whether we’re backing up hip-hop artists up in New York, or rocking the eff out of Philly, all we want to do is play.”

Support them in their efforts — visit them at Grape Street, and stop by their MySpace page: www.myspace.com/stillicide. (FYI, Lee says, “We make our MySpace very interactive. It’s not just an information stop for people to check out, but a way for you to connect with us.”) Their official Website is www.stillicideinfo.com.

THE HISTORY:

When the band Stillicide formed in the spring of 2002, its band members looked to the music of their predecessors to help define their style. The psychedelic funk sounds of ‘70s arena rock and the powerful hard rock and metal of the ‘80s and ‘90s can all be heard in their music, but the band managed to take all of these influences and use them to create a sound that is uniquely their own . Stillicide refers to their music as “groove rock with a funk fetish,” which is an accurate description. The band has a diverse sound; some of their songs like Golden Discipline lean heavy on the rock side while others like Chamomile have a strong funk edge. It would be difficult for anyone not to hear the strong groove influence in Three Little Words, but many might argue that Sin Within is perhaps the best representative Stillicide song because of the balance it strikes between the rock, funk, and groove influences.
Despite their innovative songwriting and ability to breathe new life into cover songs, it is the band members themselves who give Stillicide their uniqueness. An interesting blend of personalities coupled with astounding musicianship has created a band that brings a palpable energy to every stage on which they play. The band’s powerful performances are infused with improvisation, poetic lyrics, memorable harmonies, and their trademark—dueling guitar solos; and Stillicide invites the audience into their world with the bits of spontaneous conversation and self-deprecating humor that often takes place between songs.
Stillicide, which was formed in Northern New Jersey, made their Philadelphia debut in the winter of 2006, quickly becoming a staple on the Philadelphia music scene with shows at such venues as Abilene, The Pontiac Grille, and Club 218. The band frequently performs at the Grape Street Pub in Manayunk, Pennsylvania where they’ve enjoyed multiple performances at the WMMR (93.3FM Philadelphia) Thursday night Rock Show. Stillicide made its main stage debut at Philadelphia’s legendary Trocadero Theatre in October 2006 which was preceded by their New York City debut in September. The band began headlining a weekly gig at the Grape Street Pub in August 2007, and recently completed work on a new EP which has a tentative release date of September 2007.

THE BAND MEMBERS:

It is Rob Vazquez, a dedicated drummer since the age of three, who lays the foundation of the band's unique sound with his confident, aggressive playing which has been influenced by his admiration for the styles of Chad Sexton of 311 and Living Color's Will Calhoun. Rob also draws on inspiration from Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthew's Band.
Building on the foundation of rhythm laid down by Rob is bassist Nat Werschulz, who with his bass guitar named Shirley, an instrument that survived a blazing three hour car fire (and has the scorch marks to prove it), is not afraid to experiment with his style. Inspired by legendary bassists John Entwistle and John Paul Jones, Nat constantly strives to create something new, which always gives his playing a sense of spontaneity.
Completing the instrumental walls of Stillicide are guitarists Chris Lee and Eric Schraedley. Chris, whose style has a sullen blues feel blended with an atmospheric rock sound, has been influenced by guitarists such as Jimmy Paige and Joe Perry, but it is the Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan who has had the greatest impact on Chris, inspiring the dirty tone that is apparent in his playing today.
Eric, a former member of the Berserk Postal Clerks, brings his ska-punk experience to Stillicide. Eric has an appreciation for well structured guitar riffs, no matter how simplistic, and draws his inspiration from legendary guitarist Carlos Santana, who has influenced the smooth leads and refined sweet tone that is evident in his playing.
The final element of Stillicide is its voice, the voice of Clint Davis. Clint’s admiration for the technique of Tool’s Maynard James Keenan and the style of Brandon Boyd of Incubus shape his thoughtful, yet subtle, melodies and harmonies. That, combined with his expressive and compelling stage presence, blend with his fellow band mates to create an undeniable chemistry that proves to be mesmerizing.
