"Still Leven - Everyday and Never ep"

Chi sono questi Still Leven? - Hate Tv

"Still Leven - Everyday and Never ep"

The influx of Italian bands into this blog continues apace, and as ever the output is interesting. Lead track Just A Face In The Crowd is a sombre thing indeed. Think of the lead singer of Editors, drunk and depressed, with a wailing banshee on backing vocals. The near eight minutes passes by at a funereal pace, wailing and gnashing of teeth at life’s injustices. There’s also a weird squeaky electronic bit that overlays the death march half way in. Broken Asses And Wasted Times is a despairing wail and howl for the nether world, while The Dreamer is Nick Cave at his most restless and doom laden, a mysterious backing overlaid by freeforming vocals. The Long Talk After Mom Died reminds me of Tindersticks at their most downbeat, if Stuart was duetting with a suitably gothic female. It trundles on for over seven minutes, never breaking sweat, never in a hurry to get anywhere, even though the volume steadily increases as it nears the climax. - Russell's Reviews

"Still Leven - Everyday and Never ep"

- In Your Eyes Zine

"Still Leven - Everyday and Never ep"

There's a grave / severe mood living in these four songs, by Still Leven, young band from Genova, debut release on Imao in the Mouth rec.
While the diy / production somehow affects the impact of the first two tracks, as i think, The Dreamer and The Long Talk After Mom Died, differently, are like immune to that, drawing a growing feeling, emotional and suffering an inner agony. Two gems. It's like They sing and tell of Disgrace and Grief, keywords of a black grey shaded world, and the male/female vocals are like the wedding promises in a ceremony celebrated in the middle of the desert during a sand storm, where the couple is Nick Cave and Siouxie Sioux, or their dirty offspring coupling against rules.
A mixture of declaiming early 80s new-wave and indie bitterness, like the violent visions of The Dreamer, - truly hypnotic - or the evocative flute intro in Just a Face in the Crowd, - a strong chemical formula for sure unusual in Italy, - something, hopefully, deserving Your full attention. - Komakino Zine

Still Leven was born – like many other bands – just as a way to kill boredom without having to learn music in order to play over and over covers of rock ‘n roll monsters.
First experiments included a computer, its built-in microphone and a guitar, while early influences were Arab Strap, Mogwai, Joy Division.
In 2008 the band evolved into a more post-punk/post-rock-driven sound and recording their first ep, Everyday And Never, which came out in early 2009 for independent italian label Imao In The Mouth Records, followed up by gigs in Genoa, Still Leven’s hometown, and a couple more in Italy, including opening acts for bands as Pumajaw, The Dead Science, Former Ghosts & Parenthetical Girls.
In 2010 begun the recordings of the first album, which continued throughout the whole year, and as a result alongside the post-punk-oriented songs there were others flirting with electronics and more synthetic sounds.
Early 2012 will see the release of the album, “Cases of Bluntness”, for the independent Uk label Pronoia Records.
Current influences are: New Order, Primal Scream, a lot of dubstep, hip hop and funky.
