Still Motion

Still Motion is a jazz group rooted in tradition, creating music for the present day. The quintet features a dynamic mix of musicians from veteran players to rising young talent that helps to further this goal. The result is music with a sense of urgency that conveys the relevance of jazz in the here and now.

The group’s instrumentation (saxophone, trombone, guitar, electric bass and drums) lends itself to a unique sound and timbre, further distinguished by the band’s repertoire. While their list of repertoire is continually expanding, the focus of Still Motion is clearly on original music. Their recent debut album (Andrew Hartman and Still Motion) features the compositions of guitarist Andrew Hartman, which draw together elements of Latin, drum & bass, soul and straight ahead jazz. For Still Motion, the beauty of jazz is that it can adapt much from other styles but remain true to itself, with improvisation at the heart of the music.

The band formed in 2008, but the members’ work together long predates the group. Saxophonist Michael Cox and bassist Andy Woodson have played together for more than twenty years. The musical rapport within the band is audible on their new album but is still more apparent when they take the stage. Recent performances have found the group featured at festivals such as the Jazz & Ribs Festival, the Easton Jazz Concert Series and the Columbus Arts Festival as well as jazz club venues including Dick’s Den, the Short North Tavern and the Rumba Cafe.
