"STILLSHOT"

Rob Yocum - Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Drums

Mark Culler - Drums, Vocals

Garner Wrisley - Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Drums

Jason Staples - Bass, Vocals

One of the newer bands in the area, but already a crowd favorite with a following, Stillshot raises the local music scene to a new level. You won’t find any love shacks or brick houses here. It’s a refreshing change from most cover bands. Their influences include: 3 Doors Down, All American Rejects, Weezer, Sublime, Fall Out Boy, Lenny Kravitz, Staind, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Beck, The Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead, Maroon 5, Incubus, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Creed, Cold, and Nickleback.

Lead singer Rob Yokum’s voice commands attention and is reminiscent of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and all the great grunge rock of our time, yet he demonstrates accomplished croon control on the more delicate ballads such as Oasis “Wonderwall” and Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved.”

Stillshot is a wide variety band that plays everything from Queen to Drowning Pool, and prefers not to be labeled as any one genre, as they adjust their set list to what club they play, therefore leaving it pretty wide open to play many different venues and all over the area. Keep an eye open for Stillshot, coming to your favorite local club soon!

"Stillshot July 24th 2007"

Garner: “What I like to think is, people will come out and see us play and then the next day they’ll be like ‘You’re not gonna believe this, man, but I went to this club and saw this band…they were jumping around like crazy, acting like idiots, making the crowd laugh.’ I just want people to talk about us and say, ‘These guys are really good.”

You got me, Garner. The first time I saw Stillshot, I was impressed to say the least. They look familiar, but they don’t sound familiar. That’s because the guys: Rob, Garner, Jason, and Mark - were all former band members in some random way or another, but have now joined forces to stir it up in South Bend.

One of the newer bands in the area, but already a crowd favorite with a following, Stillshot raises the local music scene to a new level. You won’t find any love shacks or brick houses here. It’s a refreshing change from most cover bands. I got their take on that observation:

Aim: Your website says you prefer not to be labeled as performing any one genre of music, but I beg to differ… you seem to be more of a real rock band more than most.

Garner: We are a rock and roll band, don’t get me wrong, but what we meant is that we don’t play all heavy music (or) all slow music, we’re doing Poison, and then we bust into Bulls on Parade, which is a very alternative style song.

Rob: We are trying to be a little more current, a little more rock and roll; we saw that a lot of the other bands were playing all the same songs.

Garner: We play the edgier songs.

Rob: Jason Sapen said we’re the Anti-Blammo. It’s like Superman and Bizarro, its like they have to exist to even out the universe. We appreciate all the other bands and what they do. It makes for a pretty decent music scene around here.

I caught up with them on a gorgeous summer night at Simeri’s Old Town Tap. A different show than usual, as it was R.A.G.S. (the Rob and

Garner show) featuring Mark and Jason from Stillshot. Rob explains, “Tonight we’re going to be primarily acoustic guitars and acoustic type music but we’re still going put on a pretty good high-energy show.”

Garner: “I’m not, I’m gonna sit on the floor.”

It’s a t-shirt and jeans kind of night and Garner is vertical as they open with “Blue on Black”. Rob breaks out some harmonica skills on “Roadhouse Blues”, and its not long before the mob too gets on their feet and eventually crowds the stage as the band takes off on more energetic numbers.

Lead singer Rob Yocom’s voice commands attention and is reminiscent of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and all the great grunge rock of our time, yet he demonstrates accomplished croon control on the more delicate ballads such as Oasis “Wonderwall” and Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved.”

Ever transposable, “Garner and the Blowfish” cover “Let Her Cry, and later he takes over drums as Mark steps upstage to do the Whitestripes cover “Seven Nation Army.”

All this aptitude, I had to know…self-taught?

Rob: Yep, I am

G: I went to Julliard. (laughs)

Rob: He’s lying.

G: I’m just joking. I took guitar lessons for about a year and that was it.

Rob: We’ve all been playing for a long time.

Jason: It’s been about 10 years, self-taught.

Garner: I don’t want to do the math.

Rob: Mark has been doing this forever. He was in a pretty successful band called Deadspin. (Mark smiles.) They opened up for a few national acts

like Creed and Cowboy Mouth.

Garner: A seasoned musician behind the drum set is what you need.

Seasoned as they are, their youth and vitality abound, especially when they take on Limp Bizkit’s “The Nookie” - a rare cover performance in this area that always literally gets the crowd jumping. Says Rob, “We want the people to see us having a good time, and we don’t just want to go through the motions. When people come out we want to give them a show.”

But where do Stillshot’s true ambitions lie?

Rob: We want to rule the universe.

Garner: We just don’t have a spaceship yet.

"Where My Boys At? RAGS"

“Where my boys at?” Two of the city’s most talented young men come together to bring a unique quality to acoustic music in Michiana. Rob Yocom and Garner Wrisley produce the perfect medley of unplugged unison and comical camaraderie that is the Rob and Garner Show.

RAGS has been performing in the area for over four years now, and each show brings a fresh vibe, and often a different cast of characters. Always open to the idea of “the more the merrier,” Rob and Garner often bring along the members of their other “little” sideshow, Stillshot, and even widen the stage to many other Michiana musicians. It’s an open mic feel, but the constant is the chemistry between Rob and Garner, whose harmonies and strumming meld skillfully, yet naturally.

The pair was recently divided under unfortunate circumstances when Garner broke his leg in a car accident. Shows were booked, and Rob carried on solo and strong, but he and fans alike were relieved when Garner was able to re-join the show. Leg propped and pain meds popped, the show went on and all was right with the world again.

The duo has been featured on 95.3 WAOR several times, performing “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Patience” among others. Their song list varies from rock and alternative ballads to sing alongs and upbeat jams.

Here is their take on the acoustic scene:

What are the benefits of playing an acoustic show in comparison to a full on electric Stillshot show?

R: Acoustic shows are more laid back. We get an opportunity to show our personalities a bit more. There's just something about pluggin' in that acoustic, pulling up a stool and letting it all hang out. And I think people really enjoy seeing a different side of us. We thoroughly enjoy the intimacy of it. It also gives us a great opportunity to play some more music that we really enjoy. Not that we don't have a great time with Stillshot, but we have to cater more to what people want to hear. Whereas with the acoustic show we have much greater musical freedom.

G: I definitely love the intimacy with the crowd an acoustic show offers. There's not a lot of sound equipment and lights in between you and the audience. You get to actually see the response on people’s faces. It's nice to know when someone is enjoying a song that you’re playing.... or not enjoying it! LOL. I also like the fact that we're not banging down a set list. You know...trying to keep the dance floor packed or be on an exact schedule so you don't cut into the DJ's spin time. We get to actually talk to the crowd, tell a few jokes. Maybe get a drink of our beer before we bust into the next song.

Do you see most of the same fans at each?

R: We are lucky to have made some great "friends" over the years. I think it's kind of silly to call any of them fans. Hell, we're just a couple of Indiana boys doing what we love. But the answer is yes. For some unknown reason I guess we grow on people and they come out and have fun with us quite often. ; )

G: Rob and I are for sure blessed to have such good friends. It's great when we're doing an acoustic show on a Thursday night, and you see a buddy walk in knowing damn well that they have to be up at the butt crack of dawn to go to work the next morning, but they're still there anyways to hang out and party. But the real mind blow is after hangin all night Thursday, they show up to a STILLSHOT show Friday night running on 4 hours of sleep and ready to do it all over again! That happens so much! Man it's crazy! I freakin' love it!

What are your favorite songs to perform and why?

R: My personal favorites are "She will be loved" by Maroon 5 and "Everything Changes" by Staind. I've also enjoyed playing some of my old original music I wrote many years ago. We both enjoy playing "Patience" "Round Here" and anything by Pearl Jam!

G: I would have to say any song with harmonies! There are a handful of acoustic acts out there and the biggest thing that sets us apart is our vocals. Rob is definitely the lead vocalist even though I sing a few songs, but my strong point in the vocal department is background vocals and I have to say.... I’ve been singing for a lot of years with a lot of different singers and there is no one I can mesh my vocals better with than Rob. I absolutely love harmonizing with him! It's so easy! There are actually a few songs we do that certain parts in that song don't actually have harmonies, but I'll add some in just for fun. Not to mention it fattens up the sound. We get a lot of compliments on our vocals.

Do you take requests?

G: Requests? Hell, half of the songs we play are by request! Right Rob?

R: Yep, if we know the song! Or we might run through a little bit if we are familiar with it. Believe it or not, we put a lot of work into learning material for the shows. And we usually like to have the song down before we play it out. Although like we said, we've been known to goof through a song or two now and then.
