Stone Phoenix has deep roots which spawned their music, name and friendship with each other. Jon, Dan and Reid have been friends for nearly two decades and have played music together off and on since before the turn of the millennium. Zach (who is Reid's brother-in-law), joined in 2009, and Stone Phoenix was officially born.

The common ground between all four musicians is hard rock, though each has their own flavor of music. Some major influences that are apparent are; Metallica, Alice In Chains, Guns N' Roses, Led Zeppelin, Tool, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd and Lynyrd Skynyrd to name a few. These lay the foundations for Stone Phoenix's driving rhythms, vocal harmonies, complex time changes and signatures, and signature foundation of metal and southern rock. Add the four members' slight tendencies to individually lean toward blues, jam rock, progressive rock and metal, and you begin to understand where the band's unique sound comes from.

While original music is the focus of the band, they also enjoy playing cover gigs at bars and other venues. While most covers generally fall into the category of hard rock from the 80s and 90s, Stone Phoenix also includes a few classic/southern rock, new rock, blues, and country crowd-pleasers.
