Performing in a scene largely dominated by metal bands can be challenging at times, say the members of Stones Throw, a self-described modern grunge band.

"Most people are surprised at our sound," says vocalist-guitarist Tom Stone. "They don't know a band like ours exists."

Their music certainly is hard and energetic, and peppered with moments of intensity. But there's also a lyrical aspect you won't find in your average metal band.

"We're not in your face all night," says drummer Brian Popham. "You can sit back, talk and enjoy a song ... then we'll punch you in the face again."

Stones Throw's unique sound landed it in last year's regional finals of Bodog Battle, a competition for a chance at a recording contract with Bodog Music. That success spurned further successes: Stones Throw is now one of the Elite 13 bands playing in George's Union Station's and 94.3 KILO-FM's weekly, summer-long Locals Rule lineup.

Now the guys just say they want potential fans to know they're here.

"If people see us once," says guitarist Joel Malick, "they always come back for more."

Bio

StonesThrow started with guitarist/vocals/songwriter Tom Stone and drummer Brian Popham coming together back in 2003. The weekend jam sessions quickly turned into a serious attempt to infect listerners with a hardhitting in your face sound. With the addition of Guitarist/Backup vocaltist Joel Malick, and bassist David Franklin, Stones Throw had the perfect mix needed to bring together the sound it's known for today, a true grunge rock base with a contemporary twist that makes you want more and more. Just barely 1 year into their pursuit of stardom, StonesThrow entered the largest battle of the bands in the country, the Bodog Battle of the Bands. Winning three shows in the Denver region, based solely on judges voting,They found themselves in the Citywide final which consisted of bands not only from Colorado, but the surrounding states as well. This placed them in the top 84 unsigned bands in the country out of 7,000 that started. Playing for a sold out Gothic Theatre, Stones Throw rocked the house and received rave reviews! Since the Battle, StonesThrow has been asked to share the stage with national act The Exies, and are building a large fan base in the region!
