"Punk, poetry, guitars and a few good laughs"

"Thankfully, a band called the Storefront Lawyers performed an acoustic set right after me, and did fantastic. Lead singer Mark got the crowd to wake up and respond to their great stage presence"

Need to unwind and shake off a stressful week? Need to dance off the thoughts of your teachers, homework or calories from a daily Union lunch break? The best way to forget about everything while singing and dancing your face off is jumping into the front row of the most crowd pleasing local band, the Storefront Lawyers.

These four “lawyers”; Sophomore Graphics Communication and Journalism major Alex Mansir, Senior Construction Management major Greg Rutkowski, Junior Music Business major Max Ellis and Junior Independent Studies major Mark Piekos, met while working for WestTech, the technical company in charge of the lights and sound for events at Western But some may be surprised to hear that they started the band only 4 short months ago. Listening to them and watching how well they work together, you would suspect that they have been together for years.

Named jokingly after the 1970 TV show of the same name, Storefront Layers is a four person blues/rock/fusion band that not only jam to crowd favorites/requests but rock a couple of their own original songs.

When asked what was the main theme of their songs they replied “All about bitches… and life, [but] there are mainly two types of songs; songs about good women and songs about bad women.”

They usually start off each performance with “Superstitious” by Stevie Wonder, then move on to other crowd favorites, such as Queen, MIA, Sublime and the Jackson 5. “I liked when they played ‘Caress Me Down’ and ‘What I Got’ from Sublime” Said host of their most recent show, Junior Law Enforcement major Demo Correa.

“We keep bringing them back because they’re a really good band and people are interested in them.”

“I have seen the band several times, I think they are a dynamic group and I have a crush on the band in general. They have such phenomenal stage presence and really interact with the crowd,” said Sophomore Journalism major Lauren Staten.

Although fans always enjoy rocking out to their favorite songs, the Lawyers agree “There’s nothing better than playing the songs the four of us wrote.”

However, during the performance on Saturday night, the Lawyers learned that there is something better than playing their own songs. That’s when the audience sings along with the songs that the four of them wrote.

“Queen of Union Square” was by far a crowd favorite for their original pieces. Lead singer/guitarist, Mark Piekos noted on stage how cool it was to see the audience singing along to their song .

“It’s got a funky blues beat, it’s original and it’s a really good party song. Blues is the base of good rock and roll.” Said Sophomore History major Adrian Delgado.

Some fans were even lucky enough to walk home with a demo CD from a live acoustic set they did in earlier this semester. On this CD you can find their two original songs, “Kisses From Melissa” and Queen of Union Square” as well as a Jackson 5 cover of “I want you back”.

“I got their CD and I was kind of disappointed because there were only 3 tracks on it… I wish there would have been more” Delgado said.

For those who didn’t get a CD, the three songs, contact information and pictures, are all available on their MySpace page; .

But let’s be honest, with a band like Storefront Lawyers, your going to regret not seeing them live; March 11 in the Union Billards Room, April 18 they are opening for We Know Jackson at the union and on April 22 they will be playing at Earth Fest. This is a band you definitely want to check out.
