"The 10 Best Vancouver, BC Releases of 2019"

"Rising swiftly from the musical outskirts of Vancouver and headfirst into the maelstrom of the current political climate, Strange Breed is a cathartic hit of head-banging, feminist garage rock.

The four-piece band’s debut studio album forges into issues evocative of the 90s riot grrrl movement (brutally, as relevant as ever)—the patriarchy and gender inequality being at the forefront.

Gritty punk ballads dedicated to female empowerment and consent breakaway to all-out rock and roll exaltations of sexuality.

Permanence. contains the rebel spirit of The Runaways and legitimizes the simple joy of jumping on your bed, screaming along to the lyrics." -Dayna Mahannah - Beatroute Media

"All-Queer Female Rockers STRANGE BREED Discuss and Debut Their Socially and Politically-Charged Record ‘Permanence.’"

"This quartet is one of the most cognizant, socially-aware bands in Canada today, taking on with pride a recognition that they have the opportunity to not only bring visibility and transparency to these issues but to also amplify their own stories and those of others around them through the platform of music and performance." - Chris Gonda - PureGrainAudio

"STRANGE BREED SHATTERS THE GLASS CEILING WITH NEW RECORD: 'PERMANENCE'"

"Since releasing their self-produced EP in 2017, the band has sonically evolved to an edgy, socially driven hard-rock powerhouse. Their debut album, Permanence, is set to drop on September 13, and it has the musical potential to propel the group into the mainstream echelon. " - Johnny Papan - Rekt Chords Magazine

"How one post on Craigslist became the start for the rising girl powered queer band, Strange Breed"

Strange Breed is like a cocktail to remove ink when in need to re-write fate, no matter how tough the process is to receive a clean page. With just a little bit of firm pressing, the four piece group is on their way to helping others figure out how to do the same with their activist inspired music. - Rad & Raw Magazine

"All-Female Rock Band Strange Breed Is “Closer” Than You Think"

"...Strange Breed’s latest single “Closer” features cascading guitars and high octane drums accompany a strong vocal and a structurally varied melody that lets the experienced rain down in the way that vintage punk-rock once did. All of this comes with a distinct sense of authenticity, as if this is what the band has to do, this is what they’ll be doing whether you’re listening or not. It’s a great sound, raw and real, with some refreshingly entertaining songwriting. The personal touch intrigues and “Closer” in particular make you want to listen in full. You can lose yourself in the fullness of the sound, think back to the mosh-pits of the nineties and earlier, or just revel in the originality as it stands today." - Buzz Music LA

"Artist Spotlight: Strange Breed"

"...It’s heavy subject matter made accessible through the group’s playful songwriting and boisterous personality, both in the studio and in front of a crowd.
Even the most catatonic show-goer might find it hard to sit still during one of Strange Breed’s sets. If you’re not moving, the band will do it for you—sometimes by dancing with an enormous plush shark during their fittingly-titled track “Sharks”, sometimes with a leap into the crowd from Dupas." - Aly Laube - The Runner

"Women’s Day Show"

"The mood in the space changed as people stood up in anticipation of Strange Breed’s set. These self-identified queer feminist rockers were incredible, even more so considering that they have only been playing together since June 2017. Their songs combined complex drum beats, strong shout-singing reminiscent of Corin Tucker and both melodic and heavy guitar to produce powerful, upbeat grunge punk. The whole band played with plenty of positive energy, which they transmitted into their dancy audience. The positive atmosphere they created did not, however, disguise the seriousness of the issues addressed in some of their songs — “The C Word,” an homage to consent, and “Gun Control,” a challenge to the hypocrisy of the NRA. I must admit that my favourite moment of Strange Breed’s set was when they covered feminist punk classic “Rebel Girl,” which turned into a giant sing-along with the crowd. " - Hannah Toms - Discorder Magazine

Bio

Strange Breed is a 4 piece, all queer, all-female alternative garage-rock band based out of Vancouver, BC. Sounding reminiscent of every 90’s femme rock anthem (think Sleater-Kinney, Veruca Salt, Bikini Kill, Hole) while keeping a firm grip on the modern alternative-rock sound of today (Paramore, The Pretty Reckless, The Beaches, July Talk).

In a short 2.5 years, they have been invited to play large local venues such as Fortune Sound Club, The Fox Cabaret, The Waldorf, Venue, The Rickshaw, and The Cobalt, and have completed their first cross country tour. They recently finished recording in the legendary Hipposonic & Fader Mountain Studios to release the digital singles that have sparked the bands’ quick success, as well as build suspense for the release of their debut album, “Permanence.”. They have had their music played on popular community/campus radio stations across the country including CBC Music, CITR 101.9 FM & CJSW 90.9 FM and their song “Sharks” was selected as CJSF 90.1’s #1 (Vancouver Mixtape) Track of 2018. They were also Top 100 Finalists in CBC’s Searchlight 2019 Competition, listed as a producer’s pick.

Strange Breed released their debut studio album, “Permanence.” on September 13th, 2019, and shortly after embarked on a cross country tour spanning from Vancouver Island to Montreal, QC. Within the first 3 weeks, “Permanence.” cracked the Ear-Shot Campus Radio Top 50 Charts (Week of Oct 1 2019), as one of the only unsigned albums to do so, and has gotten public acknowledgment from music scene veterans such as Bif Naked & Said The Whale.

Strange Breed constantly has individuals of all different backgrounds reaching out and expressing how much they appreciate seeing queer representation in accessible music, and hearing “good, catchy tunes with an actual message”.

“…It’s heavy subject matter made accessible through the group’s playful songwriting and boisterous personality, both in the studio and in front of a crowd.
Even the most catatonic show-goer might find it hard to sit still during one of Strange Breed’s sets. If you’re not moving, the band will do it for you—sometimes by dancing with an enormous plush shark during their fittingly-titled track “Sharks”, sometimes with a leap into the crowd from Dupas.” (-Aly Laube for The Runner Mag — Read the whole article here)

Strange Breed is all about promoting positive change through the messages in their music and in their general interactions with the world and online – be it political, social, or based around physical/mental health. They have been a part of raising money for vital organizations like Music Heals BCGirls Rock Camp Vancouver, The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre and WISH! Drop In Centre Society. “Permanence.” is the deepest and most pure exploration of those values and beliefs.

Strange Breed always takes a moment during each show to ensure that the acknowledgement is made of who’s land they have the privilege of playing music on, and ensures that people know what kind of environment they are entering when they come to a Strange Breed show…

“WE PROMOTE SAFE SPACES.
What does THIS mean? We don’t tolerate folks who spew hate speech against marginalized groups. We don’t support violence of any kind. We don’t tolerate sexism, racism, homophobia/transphobia etc. We don’t want to see any kind of predatory behaviour at our shows – if someone says no to you (be it to dance, to make out, to let you buy them a drink, anything at all) RESPECT that. If you don’t, you’re out in a heartbeat.
If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable at one of our events, please find one of us and say something. We want you to know what kind of environment you’re a part of when you come to one of our shows. ♥️”

Safe spaces, Inclusivity, Good times and Great music is what these babes are all about.
