Strictly For Kicks

BandBluesRock

You've just opened another beer in your car on the way back from a family reunion when you see the cop lights in your rear view mirror. Your heart races, your mind becomes simultaneously clear and confused, and you wonder if you have what it takes to outrun that cop. SFK is on the radio. Perfect.

Biography

Formed in 2001 when given an opportunity to open for Karen Tyler at a private BBQ & Blues, SFK has grown up as a band with energy, charisma, talent, and a strong and loyal following. Now performing at a variety of venues in California, including Blues Festivals, Brewfests, private events, and clubs, SFK is thrilled by the enthusiastic response of dancers and fans at their shows. SFK is also honored to be the Sacramento Blues Society President’s band of choice for her own Blues events. Although slow and soulful songs find their way into the mix, SFK’s specialty is high-energy, danceable music with an emphasis on fun.

The highlights for the band up to now are headlining a sold out show on Grammy Weekend at B.B. King's Blues Club in Hollywood, making it to the semi-finals of the selection process to appear on NBC’s band search reality show, Star Tomorrow in July of ‘06, and their repeat appearances (the only band to be invited back four consecutive years) at the Northern California Blues Festival. There they have shared the stage with Chris Cain, Daniel Castro and Shana Morrison, Zakiya Hooker, and the Ford Blues Band. SFK also managed to score a gig at the Sacramento Hard Rock Café for a rare night of live music at the world-famous club.

SFK’s first CD, Love, Sex, and Romance, is now available on their own label, Random Rhythm Records. Since the CD’s release on CDBaby.com, Amazon.com, and other internet outlets in January of 2006, the response for the CD has been tremendous. Within the first week of release, radio stations in the United States, France, Canada, and Belgium requested the CD for airplay.

Meet the Band

Harry "Chopsticks" Baumgardner – Harry is veteran drummer who has played with the likes of Rolling Stones all-time great guitarist #40 Eddy Hazel from the "P. Funkadelics”, Terry Goral from "Heir Apparent", Fats Johnson from the "New Christy Minstrels" fame, Cash McCall from the "Drifters", and Mearle Bregante and Larry Sims from the "Loggins & Messina Band". He has had some great moments in his musical career, but his enthusiasm has never been higher than now with his new band mates in Strictly For Kicks. Along the road, Harry has met and been influence by drummer greats Ron Bushy, Michael Deroiser, Denny Carmassi, Ceasar Zuiderwijk, Chester Thompson, and Mr. Billy Cobham. Although Harry Baumgardner is not yet a household name for drummers, he has graced the cover of "Westword" in Denver with band "Wanker", and "The Auburn Journal” and the “Colfax Record” in California.

Jason Haxton – A guitar addict since he got his first electric guitar at age 16, Jason has played both lead and rhythm guitar in club bands through his late teens and twenties. When the band Strictly For Kicks formed, Jason found a new love, the bass guitar. Playing finger, pick, and slap styles, Jason loves to strap on his wireless system and join the crowd in tearing up the dance floor. Watching Jason’s body language and huge smiles as he revels in the delight of the performance is undeniably infectious. On the back end, Jason grinds away the nights mixing and mastering Strictly For Kicks' best new tunes for their next CD.

Clark Bishop – Born and raised in the south, his first performance was at the age of four when he sang Away in a Manger for the Christmas program. Clark was instantly hooked. He began singing solos in church and eventually branched out to sing the other types of music he loved. Influenced by Gospel, Soul, and Rock ‘n’ Roll, Clark blends them all together to create a style that is rich, warm, powerful, moving, and true to his soul. A confident and fun front man, Clark has the time of his life in every energetic performance and takes everyone along for the ride.

Dirk Van Stralen – Inspired to take up guitar by his mother’s love of music and talent for the clarinet, Dirk first found a guitar in his hands at age ten. He teethed his technique on classical guitar, and then became a passionate follower of rock guitar pioneer Eddie Van Halen. Dirk was so devoted to his studies of guitar that his high school girlfriends referred to his guitar as his wife. Since those early days, he has played lead guitar in a number of Northern California bands. During Dirk's time with Strictly For Kicks, his love for his instrument and the music has blossomed as he has become a devout student of the techniques and musical feels of Kenny Wayne Shepherd and legendary guitarists Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton. Through his varied influences, Dirk has created a compelling and emotional style all his own.

"It was all my pleasure. It's always great to get out and see fantastic bands. You guys stood out above the rest not only because you play great music but you had fun and smiled. That is the key right there. You were smiling all the time:) As a quasi promoter that is one of the things I look for. If you are having fun and happy the crowd is having fun as well. Dirk kicked butt on the guitar as well.

Love, Sex, and Romance

Written By: Clark Bishop

Well you look into my eyes and see eternity
And when I hold you in my arms, no place I'd rather be
Oh the nights spent in the city, what a magical place
I'll never know a better smile than the one on your face
Yeah you look at me and tell me I'm the one you adore
It's just love, sex, and romance baby
Nothing more

Love, sex, and romance
Oh love, sex, and romance
Can't help but think that you're the one that I've been waiting for
It's just love, sex, and romance baby nothing more

Well now come on over here and let me do it again
I like the way that you say baby when I pull you close in
I can't believe it's four a.m. and we're still making love
I need some sleep but I can't stop because you're Helen of Troy
You say not in a million years could you walk out that door
It's just love, sex, and romance baby
Nothing more

Love, sex, and romance
Oh love, sex, and romance
Can't help but think that you're the one that I've been waiting for
It's just love, sex, and romance baby nothing more

Well now tell me what you're getting so excited about
Another time, another place I've been with you there's no doubt
I see you moving to the music on the dance floor
It makes my heart skip a beat and come back crying for more
The world is such a better place when you walk through that door
It's just love, sex, and romance baby
Nothing more

Love, sex, and romance
Oh love, sex, and romance
Can't help but think that you're the one that I've been waiting for
It's just love, sex, and romance baby nothing more

Love, sex, and romance
Mmm,hmm,hmm
Oh love, sex, and romance
Let me, get that door
Can't help but think that you're the one that I've been waiting for
It's just love, sex, and romance baby nothing more

I'm Gone

Written By: Clark Bishop

Yeah I’m Gone
Lyrics by Clark Bishop
9/8/2005
Music by Jason Haxton
7/6/2006

You misunderstand me
Is that the way you wanna see me go
I think I know what you’re feeling
And I can tell you that you need to go slow
So baby look me in the eyes and tell me
You don’ want to see me round here no more
And I’m gone, I’ll be gone

You got trouble ahead now
It’s gettin closer and you’re asking for more
I think I might understand this
It’s not so different from what I’ve done before
But if you tell me I should mind my own life
Don't be the hypocrite I think that you are
Then I’m gone, yeah I’m gone

Before I go, I just got tell you
I don’t want to leave you here on your own
But you don’t give me no choice
Just call my number if you change your mind
Now I’m gone, yeah I’m gone

People gather around
And you stand there by yourself all alone
Why don’t you open your mind now
They can help you find another way
I know you think they don’t know who you are
And if they did they wouldn’t offer their love
But they’re the only one to save you soul
But they won’t stay if you drive them away
They’ll be gone, they’ll be gone

Don’t live your life all alone

Take You Away

Written By: Clark Bishop

Take You Away
by Clark Bishop
9/15/2006

Verse

Play it cool
You look so fly
All around you
Your world is alive

Dressed in diamonds
Draped in gold
Even you can’t see your heart is cold

When you wake up at night
And don’t know why your mind can’t sleep
I wonder if you ever
Think of me

Verse

See the world
Go in style
You might as well
Use up the love that you buy

Reach the stars
Name one for me
Cause when I’m gone
Baby it’s all that you’ll see

And when the pain of life
Surrounds your heart so you can’t breathe
You can reach out your
And I’ll set you free

But when you give away
The bread of life that my soul needs
You give away the love
My heart needs to breathe

Chorus

Baby come to me
Embrace the energy
Rise up to the top
And let my love set you free

I’ll never let you down
You’ll stand on solid ground
When you rise up to the top
And let my love take you away

Verse

The day arrives
You lose the game
You start to think
That there must be an escape

You make the call
I’ve loved in vain
You should know
I don’t give a damn what you say

And when you think that I’m
The reason and the source of pain
You need to understand
It’s the game that you play

So carry on the drama
And play the game for one more day
Truth be known
You won’t have it any other way

Chorus

Baby come to me
Embrace the energy
Rise up to the top
And let my love set you free

I’ll never let you down
You’ll stand on solid ground
When you rise up to the top
And let my love take you away

Take you away
Take you away
Take you away
Let me take you away

Drink Away The Blues

Written By: Clark Bishop

Well there's nothin' left in the bottle baby
Nothin' left behind the bar
I don't recall what I drank yesterday
Or the pot stashed in my car

I'd take a pill if I had one
Hell I'd probably take two
Slip away into oblivion
Figure out what I'm supposed to do

Of one thing I am certain
Just one thing I know to be true
There ain't a fool in world
Can drink away the blues

They say that one drink's too many
I say a thousand's not enough
'Cause these days it's my only friend
When things are going rough

So fill the glass to the top bartender
Fill the glasses all around
So when my heart hits bottom
No one will here the sound

Of one thing I am certain
Just one thing I know to be true
There ain't a fool in world
Can drink away the blues

I think about the promises
I think about my lies
I think about the things I did
And God I wanna die

Lord I know there's a promise land
Know I get there through the grave
If the bottle's what'll take me there
Then God get out of my way

Of one thing I am certain
Just one thing I know to be true
I ain't getting out of this alive
And neither are you
