"CD Review: Stringman Delivery – Across The Galaxy"

Stringman Delivery – Across The Galaxy
(S/R – 2017)

This album sees Don Stephens carry on from where he left off with from 'Stranded On The Moon' where you'll find some real nice rootsy vibes and sounds.

Plenty of tunes to wet your musical appetite over on this album that include the long-titled opener, 'There's An Empty Space In The Universe Tonight'; the country filled 'Directions To The Promised Land' with banjo and harmonica in high dosage; the relaxing 'Old Western Town'; the tranquil 'Night In Paradise' and laid back closer 'Waiting For The Parade'.

Lovely stuff.

Stringman Delivery – Stranded On The Moon

(S/R – 2016)

Stringman_Delivery_–_Stranded_On_The_Moon
All the way from San Antonio, Texas, this album kicks off with the bluesy harp filled 'This Train Ain't Turning Back' and continues with a very Neil Young like kinda style such as on the title track 'Stranded On The Moon''

Love how the songs are like real stories and believable as opposed to the usual contrived rock cuts full of cliches with marvellous songs that draw you in like 'Dance, Dance, Dance'; 'I Wish You Could Have Been There' with its repetitive but effective riffs or 'The Roads I Choose' with the extensive guitar solo throughout the song.

Solid and refreshing.

From San Antonio, TX we find classic rock blues artist STRINGMAN, who has a fabulous eleven track CD out now called 'Tonight We Ride' that is well worth checking out and borders between Americana, rock and blues through to melodic pop, the songs flow with majestic passion. Singer/songwriter Don Stephens has a fantastic diverse voice that is somewhere between Don Henley, Tom Waits, Brian Wilson, John Cougar Mellencamp, Neil Young and the late Dan Peek.

Don Stephens is a multi-instrumentalist playing electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards, bass pedals, and harmonica.

Back in the 60’s Don Stephens became completely overwhelmed and absorbed in the melodies, lyrics, and culture of folk and rock music. He was a fourteen or fifteen years old Midwestern boy from Indiana during this time. From that point on, classic rock, folk and blues have been an integral part of Don's life. His personal pursuit of musical exploration began in his teens as a drummer in a neighborhood rock band banging on a cheap Pearl drum set that he bought from a Sears and Roebucks’ catalogue. Don spent a lot of time back then playing along with his record player to the Kinks, Rolling Stones, Animals, Byrds, etc... It wasn’t long after that when he picked up the acoustic guitar, piano, and harmonica after getting caught up in the folk music of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, CS&N, and such. "What a magical time for music," says Don.

When you listen to the tracks on 'Tonight We Ride' you can hear Don's most influential musical inspirations come from Neil Young and Tom Waits. Neil Young’s songs and legend, especially during the 70’s, became an important part of Don's life and actually got him through some very tough times. "I’ve been a huge fan of Neil Young ever since hearing his album After the Gold Rush," says Don. "For some reason I feel connected to the lyrics of Tom Waits, his word pictures of street scenes, cars, taxi cabs, city streets, and the down-and-outers are so graphic and real to me. I became a huge Tom Waits fan after hearing him play Looking for the Heart of Saturday Night on the TV show Saturday Night Live," he explains. "I can only hope to create music at the level of Neil Young and Tom Waits, but I do what I do and write what comes to me. When the right melody comes to my head, the mental visions and storylines start flowing. All I do is write down what I see and as quick as possible or they’re gone," Don explains to me.

Stringman is very unique to other bands in that Don plays a number of instruments simultaneously to sound like a "full" power trio rock and blues group.

Don has been playing the bars and coffee houses continuously since the mid-70’s. Don's hope for Stringman is to continue writing, recording and performing to an appreciative listening audience. - Fireworks Rock Magazine

"2017 Stringman Delivery Album Review from England based Metalliville Zine"

"A quintet from Texas fronted by a guy called Don Stephens (who wrote each song) who are very retro American folk kinda ilk is kind of a way to put it but with a laid back rock style about them too.

There are many standouts that include a very Neil Young like 'A Game Called Love' and 'Instead of Trying to be Cool'; the bluesy 'It's a Strange World; or the black comedic almost, 'Why Am I Trying so hard' that would be the perfect foil for a Woody Allen Movie.

The album is very soothing, almost quirk and laid back with lyrics about ordinary day to day topics such as 'I Think I'll Go to the Dance' or 'The Rules of the Road' with plenty of harmonica through the number.

Overall think Bob Dylan and Neil Young!

"The Rocker http://www.the-rocker.co.uk/ The new home of Zeitgeist and The Rocker Reviews Roundup – Bloodbound vs. Sasha McVeigh vs. Heavy Star vs. The Rising vs. Stringman Delivery"

Now, if Stringman Delivery are ever looking for an opening act, then the aforementioned The Rising wouldn’t offend the audience. Because the Strings (as I shall call them) take their influences from the likes of Neil Young, the Byrds and Tom Petty.
Led by Don Stephens, who has previously released acoustic albums, he can trace his roots back to playing coffee houses in the mid-’70s. Now he’s hooked up with guitarist Gary Stephens, drummer Mike Cerny and bassist Terrell Mabrito for an electric outing which will appeal to fans of Tom Petty and his ilk.
They’ve got some good tunes under their belt with the likes of ‘A Game Called Love’, ‘A Long Way To Go’ and ‘Why Am I Trying So Hard’ more than enough to make fans of their heartland rock very happy indeed. - The Rocker

STRINGMAN (singer/songwriter Don Stephens) is a SOLO rock, acoustic and blues performance.  Don plays all of the instruments - guitar, bass pedals, keyboards, drum machine, harmonica and vocals - that makes the show sound like a solid three piece rock band.

DON STEPHENS has been playing electric and acoustic guitar, piano, bass pedals and harmonica professionally for over thirty years. He began his music career playing coffee houses and clubs in Indiana in the mid-'70s. His sound is heavily influenced by the rock bands and folk artists of that time including Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and others.

Don is a prolific songwriter and currently has 17 albums of original songs available on all online streaming services and CD's at Stringman shows.

Below are reviews from highly regarded English rock critics of Stringman Delivery's album Tonight We Ride that was played on English radio.

Stuart Hamilton with The Rocker: "Now, if Stringman Delivery is ever looking for an opening act, then the aforementioned The Rising wouldn’t offend the audience. Because the Strings (as I shall call them) take their influences from the likes of Neil Young, the Byrds and Tom Petty. Led by Don Stephens, who has previously released acoustic albums, he can trace his roots back to playing coffee houses in the mid-’70s.

And from rock critic Glen Milligan with Metalliville online music magazine:  "A Texas "solo-band" fronted by a guy called Don Stephens (who wrote each song) who are very retro American folk kind of a way to put it, but with a laid back rock style about him too.  There are many standouts that include a very Neil Young like 'A Game Called Love' and 'Why Am I Trying So Hard' that would be the perfect foil for a Woody Allen Movie.  The album is very soothing, almost quirk and laid back with lyrics about ordinary day to day topics such as 'I Think I'll Go to the Dance' with a marvelous distortive echoing guitar work 'Should I Turn Back' or 'The Rules of the Road'.  Overall think Bob Dylan and Neil Young!"
