Bio

Paul Bartley has played in various bands over the years - most notably The Underwoods, a Cincinnati based band which achieved some regional success and put out one EP in 2002 - "Natural Memory".

When The Underwoods dissolved in early Spring 2003, Paul saw an opportunity to focus on new songs and gig as a solo artist - with the intention of touring and releasing records. Paul wanted to do something adaptable -- something that could function as a band but also be compacted into solo mode if necessary. Subaudition grew out of this desire, as it encompasses Paul's solo-endeavers.

What is the scope of Subaudition? Subaudition is, like mentioned earlier, protean. The songs vary in mood -- some are meditative, and some are more aggressive. Drawing influence from songwriters such as Leonard Cohen, John Cale, Brian Eno, Syd Barret, etc, Subaudition evokes sensations not unlike those of Low, MBV or middle period REM. The songs recorded for the "Dictionary Game" LP are a good sampling of Paul Bartley's writing style -- lush and dynamic.

Subaudition manifests live usually as Paul on stage with amplified acoustic guitar (sometimes distorted like an electric) plus additional sounds provided by a laptop if necessary. To date, Subaudition has played shows regionally around Cincinnati/Dayton and NYC/Philadelphia in the U.S. In 2004-2005 Subaudition did a European tour playing in cities such as Dublin, Cambridge, Copenhagen and Prague.

Paul wishes to do more tours with Subaudition in the future and to add other instrumentalists such as a drummer and/or a string player/multi instrumentalist. In addition to touring, Subaudition is working on a second record which hopefully will be ready by Spring 2006.
