Submarine Racers

For four years of high school, the Submarine Racers' Joe Dowd, Neal Duggan, and Robbie Gomez roamed dark hallways without discovering the potential for musical synthesis. “We all were involved in music, but for whatever reason, it wasn’t time for us to do anything together just yet,” said Duggan. Though old friends, it wasn't until their first summer back from college that there was any interest making music together. Having each played guitar for several years, Dowd and Duggan jammed a few times together before coming up with anything close to a song. With the need for vocals on what would become “The Ascent”, they called up a friend who had become known for his writing abilities, though not when it came to music.
“I had gotten a collection of my fictional short stories published earlier in the year, but I had never written a song before,” Gomez said, “Luckily, I was cocky enough to take them up on their offer and they were nice enough to let me hop on board.”
After one song came another, then another, and another; the flood gates were open. It became clear that they had something good going so they decided to make a project out of it: the King Man LP. With the help of a session drummer, a 13 song LP was recorded in August 2008.
While not an overnight success, the project gave them the confidence to make their summer project a full-fledged band. Even though Dowd and Duggan are attending Michigan State University while Gomez is at The University of Michigan, the song-writing process has never ended. The instrumentals are recorded at MSU before being sent to UofM for the lyrical touches. Now, the Submarine Racers are busy coming up with new songs to play at their shows in and around SE Michigan. And if, as Dowd puts it, “fun music is definitely a way to turn on fans,” then the Submarine Racers will certainly be blowing through listeners minds all over the dance floor.
