"Around Town Review"

In our Around Town review, our entertainment editors take a look at the local Greensboro band "Substentz" which plays all rock/ alternative music including everything from Lenny Kravitz to Doobie Brothers to U2 to Stone Temple Pilots.

The Greensboro Telegram recently caught up with "Substentz" at the Rhinoceros Club in downtown Greensboro, where they played on Friday night, January 16th. The band's motto is that they "play the music you remember, forgot about, and wish you could hear again."

As an example, during the rendition of "Spiderweb" by No Doubt, "Substentz" is so good that if you closed your eyes you could truly believe you were there live at a No Doubt concert.

The lead singer is great and has a good bit of playful energy, so fans in the crowd always have a good time watching them on stage. In addition, the guitar work by Stentz is phenomenal and we were mesmerized watching the band recreate some favorite guitar riffs flawlessly.

The band's range is fairly wide and they featured many songs that people in the crowd could dance to but also peppered their lineup with some hard rocking tunes.

Bio

Guitarist, Greg Stentz is a progressive instrumentalist. He studied extensively at the UNCG School of Music focusing on classical and jazz guitar and spent time performing with the Greensboro and UNCG Jazz Band. After years in the metal and prog rock scene and a jaunt in pop/ rock,he has now brought his melodic, precision playing to Substentz creating musical compositions that speak from his soul, where the music tells the story and can stand alone. He has recently completed an instrumental EP called Elements, combining acoustic and classical guitars, creating a twenty minute escape from the normal.

Vocalist, Melissa Davis has been a writer/ vocalist for over 15 years. After spending 10 years in the Florida music scene, she relocated to NC and has focused on putting her poetry to music. Crowds are mesmerized by the style and energy she brings to each show where she continues to build a solid fan base for Substentz. Melissa sings what she has experienced and you can feel it in her haunting vocals.
