"EP 2005 review"

A steady bass line from Bob Baker starts the pulse and rhythm that becomes the definition of the opening track of Sudden Dark’s latest EP which was released in October/November 2005. This 3 track EP covers a generous span of over 20 minutes and fills your head with semi-psychedelic, alternative and ambient soundscapes that can allow you to lose yourself in the music. It is an album that is more about the journey of where the music can take you to than an album written with radio in mind. They take a creative approach to mixing ambient music with the heaviness of alternative music and they’ve done an excellent job with it.

The albums first song “Moon Rise” steadily builds and swirls through questions of perception and belief to a point of boiling over. Twisting in vocal effects and accentuating guitars, Bryan Carlson’s drum beat continues to build through it all. David Goffron’s vocals’ seem to reach the ends of the universe with such strength and power and then the song comes to a head, leaving you with the final words “For you I will die, believe”

“Transcent of Man (beyond material world into outer plane)” rises out of the sonic decay of “Moon Rise” and immediately we’re taken into a much deeper and melodic realm. The last song, “The Glory of Hurt” is a more atmospheric song highlighting more melody from guitarists Jeff Clayton and Eric Carlson.

Sudden Dark is a band with a maturity and talent not seen too often in bands these days and this album is a fine representation of their talent. I highly recommend this EP for your collection.
