Biography

DonCarlos Price, known on the hip-hop underground by the alias Sugar Tongue Slim, is recognized as a crafty wordsmith and street-wise lyricist. As an entertainment anomaly in a genre fractionalized by regionalism, Sugar Tongue Slim, a native of southwest Atlanta, GA, combines the appeal of a distinctively Southern vernacular with a northern “street” sense. Sugar Tongue Slim realized his talent first as a poet. His knack for language and gift of oratory prompted the natural ascension to spoken word. Slim is known on the spoken word circuit in cafés and “open mics” nation wide, consistently winning poetry slam competitions.

Showing no constraints to taboos and exhibiting no allegiance to norms, Sugar Tongue Slim’s poetry and lyrics speak to a variety of topics not excluding social, economic, and political elements. In his acclaimed poem, "Creations", Slim analogously parallels the development of his art to nativity and states, “I am the creator of creative thoughts created in me. It is I who taught myself to produce asexually.” With lyrical precision, Slim simultaneously diagnoses a culture consumed with selfishness with parallel to the evolution of the conflict in Iraq in the prolific piece Aquarium Syndrome.

In 2000, Slim made the strategic move to Philadelphia, PA to further his career. Slim’s gift for gab and discovery by independent recording company and distributor Uptown Flavor encouraged his crossover potential for the industry of music and entertainment. He made his underground debut on Uptown Flavor’s Uptown Spit’n Vol II. The buzz spawned subsequent appearances on mixCDs including DJ Wyse Schmeek, DJ Omega, DJ Wreck, DJ Whoo Kid, and DJ Dirty Rice. Furthermore, Slim is the host of DJ Dirty Rice’s Uptown Flavor Street Mixtape Pt. 2. In addition to hosting the 25-track underground release, he contributes two freestyles and an exclusive track featuring Face Money of Ice City Entertainment.

Not sacrificing style for intellectual depth, Slim acknowledges urban and popular culture with head-bobbing beats and clever composition. He confronts edgy themes based on personal experiences and combines a remarkable level of social conscience. In the forthcoming track, Pimp, Slim concedes his duality with play on words and exclaims, “It’s a million different layers to the game I preach and a million different ways to get change in the streets”. In Clear the Room, another upcoming track featuring independent artist and cohort, Korn Bread, Slim states, “All things man, it’s all about changing the system getting over”.

Currently in production, his largely anticipated release is sure to garner international appeal. Gaining notice from established producers and lyricists, executive production is done by DJ Jazzy Jeff of A Touch of Jazz Studios in Philadelphia. Jazzy Jeff is internationally known as the disc jockey for the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. A Touch of Jazz has been the production home for artists including Will Smith, Jill Scott, Boyz II Men, and Musiq Soulchild. Jazz lends his genius and production expertise to Sugar Tongue Slim on the album track “Wake up Jawn”. Additionally, among other producers contributing to the album, the famed production duo, Andre Harris and Vidal Davis – better known on the industry scene as Dre & Vidal – also contribute tracks to the album. Dre & Vidal are the production team whose chart topping clientele include Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Ruben Studdard, and Ronald Isley – just to name a few.
