Jeudi dernier une nouvelle auteure-compositeure-interprète indie folk pop émergente de Montréal faisait son « coming out » à la Sala Rossa. Secret bien gardé du Mile-End, Suleyka lançait son premier album «River for the Sea».
Produit de manière indépendante, ce premier essai traduit bien l'esprit qui habite la jeune artiste. «Écrire une chanson, c'est un processus. C'est entrer dans un sujet, dans une émotion, et évoluer à travers ». Charismatique et chaleureuse, Suleyka possède le don de créer des mélodies accrocheuses desquelles émanent une profondeur, voir même une certaine spiritualité. Spiritualité également dans les paroles qui racontent souvent un voyage intérieur sans pour autant tomber dans le pathos. Toujours humaine sans jamais être « trop », c'est justement cette sobriété qui frappe. Un choix assumé jusque dans les arrangements plutôt intimes, effectué en collaboration avec les arrangeurs réalisateurs Andrew David et Piki Chappell. «Nous avons fait une grande partie de l'instrumentation nous-même, en tapant des mains, superposant les voix, créant des éléments de percussion à partir d'objets aléatoires et des jouets. Tout au long du processus, notre objectif était de produire des pistes agréables à écouter ». Le résultat est une collection de morceaux engageants infusés d’un esprit inventif. Ultimement elle aimerait que l'on s'attache à ses chansons à notre insu, les laissant grandir doucement en nous.
Cette troubadour dans l'âme a longtemps traîné sa guitare aux quatre coins du globe, promenant sa voix douce et fragile du Brésil à l'inde en passant par la Californie, toujours se produisant devant public. C'est sans doute de cet apprentissage que provient la simplicité et l'intimité que Suleyka dégage sur scène.
Sans pour autant poser ses bagages, elle ressent le désir d’approfondir cette expérience de la scène locale avec son groupe fraichement formé. Appuyée par le percussionniste Patrick Dugas (Mark Bérubé), le bassiste Alain Burr (Auresia, Sunayah) et des invités spéciaux incluant des membres du groupe folk « Lake of Stew », elle compte multiplier les concerts au cours de l'année tout en planchant déjà sur un nouveau EP.
Préparez-vous à entendre plus de Suleyka dans les mois à venir et faites vous plaisir en allant découvrir et encourager un nouveau talent d'ici. Consommer local, ce n'est pas si mal :)

"Suleyka is a promising artist. She is totally devoted to her art" says producer Pierre Marchand the emergent Montreal indie folk pop singer-songwriter.
Mile-End’s well-kept secret is getting a lot more known with the release of « River for the Sea » her independent début album. On April 27th she presented her acoustic crafted songs at Sala Rossa supported by drummer Patrick Dugas (Mark Bérubé), bassist Alain Burr (Auresia, Sunayah) and special guests.
Suleyka traveled for years around the world with her guitar and her DIY Cd-r’s as a truth-seeking troubadour of sorts. She sang with gurus in India, shamans in Brazils, hippies in California. She learned to fingerpick her nylon-string guitar, to expose her sweet and vulnerable voice and to craft songs, sometimes catchy, sometimes heartbreaking, always authentic. She is tells stories of yearning, and learning, sharing her discoveries and insights with the listener.
Upon her return to Montreal and its effervescent music scene she filled her ears with Feist, Lhasa de Sela and Bon Iver. Merging this indie esthetic with folk influences like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, she quietly went on to record her debut album, working with arranger-producers Andrew David and Piki Chappell. The result is an engaging yet soothing collection of semi-acoustic song. « We did much of the instrumentation ourselves, clapping, layering vocals creating percussive elements from random objects and toys. Yet our aim was to produce highly listenable tracks.”
Prepare to hear more from Suleyka as she plans to establish her presence on the local music scene and touching more people with her music across Canada. She will also be collaborating with local filmmakers to create video vignettes for her songs. She keeps on writing, recording and playing around the city.
