"Summerhouse's debute CD a must for rock collection"

Summerhouse's debut CD a must for rock collection

Feb 23, 2007
By Jeanne Beneteau
NORTHUMBERLAND - A Cobourg-based band that has become a household name within the local club circuit has recently opened up its classic rock sound to a whole new audience.

Summerhouse, which consists of Dave Cunnington on drums; lead guitarist, Tom Payton; Joe Azzarello on bass guitar; and lead singer Todd Garrison, recently released its first CD 'Outside'. The recording features 11 original tracks and although it's hard to pigeonhole the Summerhouse sound, the closest comparisons would probably be a classic rock great such as Cream or perhaps the more recent Pearl Jam.

The band gets its name from an out-building located on the Cunnington's family property that has been used for music since it was built in the mid-1930s. The building was erected by the original owners for their grandchildren as a place to gather for sing-a-longs around the fieldstone bricked chimney, notes Mr. Cunnington. Dating back to the 1960's and '70s, people have been hanging out and playing music at the 'Summerhouse', he says. For the last five years (except when temperatures dip too low for comfort), the guest house has been the perfect practice spot for the band and guests and friends continue to jam at the unique location, which features a panoramic view of open fields sprawling down to Lake Ontario, he adds.

The band recently celebrated a milestone in its career with the release of its debut CD, at Port Hope's Capitol Theatre on Feb. 3 to a packed and enthusiastic audience, says Mr. Cunnington.

When it comes to the CD's original compositions, "when we get together playing music, we go where it takes us and the riffs just happen," he explains. Then the lead singer jumps in with the words.

"It's a kiddy grin from ear to ear when you know it's just right," he adds.

Outside does a lot of things right and is a keeper in the collection of any rock aficionado. The guitar licks are crisp, the drum work sizzles and the vocals are polished. All in all, 'Outside' is a strong first effort and it is easy to understand why Summerhouse is fast-becoming a rock band of note in Northumberland County.

Outside is available at the following area retailers: Zap Records, Guitar World, Country Pumpkin, Cobourg Audio and Video, Divine Cravings and Meet at 66 King St. E. in Cobourg; and Evolutions Hair Design, in Port Hope.

Today, Feb. 23, Summerhouse plays Kelly's Home Like Inn, 205 Third St., Cobourg. The band will perform songs from Outside as well as crowd favourites from the Tragically Hip. For more information, call 905-372-3234. For more on the band, visit www.summerhouserocks.ca.

Bio

Tom Payton & Joe Azzarello met in the late 90s connecting immediately once discovering each others musical talent. During the summer of 2001 Joe introduced Tom to a drummer friend of his, Dave Cunnington who happened to have the perfect spot to jam. Soon the sounds of the emerging band were heard from a small outbuilding on the outskirts of Cobourg, known as the summerhouse. Other friends showed up to jam but Tom, Joe & Dave were the mainstays. Realizing their natural ability to create music together, they took the name of their practice spot & Summerhouse was formed. In 2005 Todd Garrison became the final addition to the band, his strong vocal talents being just what was needed to complete the band.
