"Summer Lungs"

As much as I love live music, one of my favorite things to do is hang out with a musician on their turf and just shoot the breeze. I get to know them on a personal level and can appreciate what they do more so than just watching them perform. Brendan Renne is Summer Lungs. A self-described 'singer-songwriter' who happens to perform electronic music. As it turns out, we have been wanting to get together for awhile now and was finally able to last week. Him and his girlfriend/backup singer Lara were cool enough to let me into his home to discuss a wide array of subjects including the photogenic aspects of our embarrassingly dismal Pirates. He is working on new material to be hopefully released this fall. He has a gig coming up opening for RYAT at Club Cafe on Friday September 10. A bunch more 'atmospheric' photos here. - Hugh Shows Redux

"Ready? Prepared? Music?"

"...i was listening to the newest RPM podcast, when this song came on and immediately grabbed me:

this song pretty much sums up my exact taste in music right now. it fits in very nicely with my current Handsome Furs obsession, i feel. [by the way, that band now has a travelogue thing on cnn.com - crazy!]

but anyway, yeah, who is this?

summer lungs, i’ve learned, is the work of one brendan renne of pittsburgh. he plays guitar and sings over programmed/triggered loops and samples. he recorded four songs [including the one above] in january to test out his new/current setup before diving into RPM.

and if they’re anything to go by, we can expect a pretty fuckin’ sweet new album come the end of february...." - davidding.tumblr.com

Bio

Summer Lungs started in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the fall of 2008. The idea behind the band was to synthesize fifties and sixties-era pop with dark and complex subject matter atypical for pop music that is nevertheless frequently humorous. In late 2009, the band changed into a solo act in the hopes of pursuing a more nuanced and unique sound.

Recently, original Summer Lungs drummer Steve Walenchok has returned to the fold, providing live percussion in accompaniment to the guitar and electronics.

The band has recently begun work on its first full-length LP. Because we like our fruit with the seeds and rinds, it will be recorded entirely in the Summer Lungs home studio.
